Definitely the stock rims in 19" are PHATTY.

I just can't believe you passed up that pimp-daddy steel-grey metallic color.

Cool Ern, too bad I won't be around for a ride in Nov.

WELCOME BROTHA!!!

Only thing.... i dont know if i would get that Imola red color... i dont know why, but they seem like they are really hard to sell. Meaning if you look through the classifed, you see alot of 2001 Imola red M3s for sale... So think about resale....

Why not steel grey?

or Topaz blue....

dont listen to these fools. Red is a HOT color.

smurf blue looks good and stands out, but its smurf blue... all the rest of the colors besides yellow are too stock BMW and scream BORING.

and the yellow, is well, a lil TOO extreme.

go for red.

oh and also, SMG is the way to go and the STOCK 19"s look better then most aftermarket options.

dont listen to Shawn.... hes old and bored SMG ownz the manual no matter what instance, having a clutch pedal has nothing to do with being able to hold a gear in a corner. SMG is simply a clutchless manual it isnt a automatic transmission.

SMG will without a doubt offer the most fun when beating on her, the most dependability, and the most comfortable day to day driving experiecne.

The only thing the US version of SMG may be lackign is the ability for a 5000 rpm launch. lol

But then again, they may have added launch control into the US trannies... I havent checked up. and if they havent, im sure they will by 03.

SMG OWNZ YOU.

Great car, but you don't need to be told that. I drove a silver/black interior mc smg for a about an hour this May and I was hooked. It's absolutely amazing how quick you can make the thing shift by programming the tranny w/ the 4 little buttons. I found that the quickest shift was a little too abrupt for my tastes. I would get in SOOOOOOOOOOO much trouble in that car.

Congrats and all dat!!

I want an 03' for the DVD navi and I wanna see what they are gonna offer, plus it's newer and NO hint of an engine problem
Are you sure? There are still reports of late-build 2002s with bearing clearance problems. How do you know it will be corrected in time?

Nice car Ernie, but why in the hell would you get the SMG? Learn to drive stick and you will enjoy the car much more with THREE pedals on the floor.

Shawn S
Ernie, do you know how to drive manual trans at all? If not, I'd STRONGLY suggest that you learn BEFORE you decide which tranny you want in your M3.

The SMG is cool as hell, but the fact is that I'd get the manual trans if I could do it all over again.

I like the SMG concept especially since it's technically the fastest way to FAST in that car Why use three when I can WHIP in two?
That is totally wrong. It is a fact that a manual trans M3 can beat the SMG version. Even with the shitty U.S. version of the European launch control.

Not that you value his advice much, but didn’t Tom say he wishes he would have gone with the manual ???
Hey, he values my advice A LOT! Just like everyone else on this forum

Anyway, yes I did say that I wish I had gone manual instead of SMG.

NOW THOSE RIMS ARE HOT! LOOK AT THAT LIP! FUCK THAT BBS MESH LOOKING SHIT.

SMG will without a doubt offer the most fun when beating on her, the most dependability, and the most comfortable day to day driving experiecne. The only thing the US version of SMG may be lackign is the ability for a 5000 rpm launch. lol

Most dependability? Are you kidding? There's TONS of shit to go wrong with the SMG when compared to the true manual tranny. The true manual will be the most dependable tranny option.

U.S. versions do not have the same launch control as the Euro cars.

That's just not true. No matter what you may think, there is NO GREATER CONTROL than the true manual tranny.

Yes, the SMG is good, but it does NOT offer the full control that you might expect.

At first, I loved it, but soon after I felt like something was missing. And it was- the clutch pedal.

Sorry, but I see the SMG as more of a gimmick than a tool of a true driver's car.

If I decide to sell my current car, and buy another M3, it will definitely be true manual trans.

tom, i didnt say reliability, i say dependability as meaning... well.... able to get you through the everyday struggle.

ive had many MANUAL cars, I drive manual well, BUT... regardless of it all... i would kill myself if i had to drive a manual EVERYDAY again.

this wont be his toy. he wont be using it just to blast to and from the mountains now and then...

its a daily driver.

i also didnt say SMG offered greater control then a true manual... i simply said the lack of a clutch pedal has nothing to do with the ability to hold a gear through a corner as Shawn implied.

For me & most, SMG would be the way to go... you still get most of the fun of the manual... BUT you get all the joy of not having to deal with it when A) your in traffic B) your on the phone C) your masturbating in traffic D) you trying to drink your espresso E) your eatin some friiiiiiiied chicken F) your getting head in your M3

lol

I know the FEEL of a clutch pedal and having to work it makes YOU feel like your having more fun... and im sure I agree. But the reality is that technically... the difference in control... those margins are closing.

Looks like Tom and I are on the same page.
Soopa makes some good points too.

But it’s Ernie’s big (REALLY BIG) pile of CASH, so he gets to make the final decision.

A full auto can easily beat a clutch in a straight line if the power is the same at the wheels because it never fudges up a shift.
But last time I checked, most roads had many CURVES in them.

Not that you value his advice much, but didn’t Tom say he wishes he would have gone with the manual ???

Buy whatever you like, I’m just offering my opinion.

Shawn S

Shawn, i thought the same way you did.. till i drove an SMG m3. That shit is fucking amazing, even around turns you have full control of everything. It's amazing how fast it shifts.

That's the smartest thing you've said yet.

Definitely do some research and see if BMW has absolutely corrected the problem. You'll be beyond upset if your new M3 has to have a motor replaced.

And like I said before-- You owe it to yourself to at least learn to drive a manual trans BEFORE you buy the M3. At least so you can take a test-drive if they have one available.

Soopa-

I wasn't trying to say that the SMG will not hold a gear while cornering. Of course it will. Hell, the SS in your Acura will even allow that. What I was questioning was your statement that, "...SMG ownz the manual no matter what instance..."

I don't agree with that at all. I really like the SMG, but the manual trans is so much more satisfying to drive. I never did get used to NOT having a clutch pedal.

Oh, so sorry. I didn't realize that I had to own an Acura to be able to understand your psycho babble. Silly me.

So when did you become the forum asshole? I never handed you down my crown.

If you're really hard up, I'll lend you a few g's so you can buy a Bimmer too

every once in a while, the asshole gets SHIT on ... and today is your lucky day.

not entirely positive that the lack of you owning an acura is the root cause of how lost you are ... it's more of the fact that YOU'RE NEVER FUCKING HERE.

a few g's ... like that's what kept me from getting a bmw ... and not the connotation that preceeds you around here ...
