The Official Honda S2000 Thread
IDK if you can tell because it looks Concours D' Elegance spec. But I plasti dipped those wheels in the lawn (40F back when I did this) with no masking or regard for human life.
Just the rotors and pads are about $7-900 for oem supplier stuff. It is quite the expense for just brakes.
Apples to oranges really, but if you're looking for a drivers car the S2000 will not disappoint.
Plus you don't have to worry about the timing chain grenade-ing ... which is a plus

There is no car in existence that I know of...that is as fast/faster AND as reliable/low maintenance as the S2000.
Brakes are cheap. Tyres are relatively cheap.
Its not that much slower than a Cayman-S.
The compromise is that it doesn't serve ALL the purposes a Cayman or 911 would, as well as a Cayman or 911 does.
You'll need a set of track brakes and a seperate set of street brakes. Or upgrade to big brakes.
You'll find EP tyres to be annoying for daily use. Or you can buy 2 sets of wheels. Street wheels. Track wheels. Though...this really isn't only a limitation of the car itself. Its just that a Porsche is a more substantial car. So...agressive tyres aren't as loud or punishing to drive on.

One thing you will miss dearly going from a Porsche to an S2000 is the steering feel and how solidly put together the car feels in terms of NVH. Other than that, the sensation of speed in an S2000 would surprise you.
Shit, I forgot, didn't you have an S2000 before @dallison?

Yeah, the S2000 is quite a lot more utilitarian than any Porsche. There's nothing in that car that isn't there for a reason and comfort was not on the design specifications (though it's actually quite comfortable) when they made it. Overall the car is small, no cargo space, loud, and harsh(er) riding. That said, there's no other experience quite like it and, even though it's not actually that fast, the drama and noise it creates will make a lot of people poop their pants. All in all, as a toy car the S2000 is second to none for what it is. As a DD, it would be terrible though plenty of people use it as one.
It's apparently coming. Though the rumors keep suggesting it will be a MR layout. I have a feeling that will make the car a bitch to work on, but it obviously has its inherent pluses. I just hope that whatever they do, they keep it a roadster.
Surprisingly it is very easy to do. There is the IMS, timing chain, and other weaker areas on these motors. Even with normal or preventative maintenance they can still grenade a the expense of $12-20k for a new motor.
If, and i say if you are lucky, you can find a motor for 8-10k that is decent.

) so much happier now that I have a second and much more comfortable car. I was doing 50-60 miles a day in stop & go traffic and yes, it beats your ass after awhile. The S4 makes an incredibly good DD and has been surprisingly reliable in the last 6 months (at a cost, of course).

oooooh you're referring to the Porsche. I thought you meant the s2000 and I was thinking "man, I've seen used engines go for like 3-4k"

now that we are on the same page, yeah, I hear ya.
A boxster motor is that cheap, or around 5-6k. I will probably hold off a little while since having to sell the 996 at a loss stung a little bit.
I keep on toying with the idea of upgrading to a p car or something with more power but the reliability and cheap maintenence costs always shut that idea down. Hands down one of the best bang for the buck sports cars out there
Wait for spring/summer when more of the well cared for ones pop up for sale. If someone is selling now (local to you that is), they are likely winter driving it and you probably don't want that one.
I remembered yesterday that I forgot to plug the battery tender into the car. Luckily it was just fine when I opened the door after 3 months of sitting. Low temp tomorrow night is -14F without windchill...S2000 will sit for another 3 months before coming out to play.
I sleep for most of the winter. Waking up only momentarily for sustainence.
My car is 1hr away under a cover...on the stock suspension because I am working on some customized stuff with my Öhlins.
I haven't driven it since November, when I flew out to be part of Baja 1000.
At least I'm doing a karting race soon.
Yall southern coastal mofos don't know how hard life is.

I'll have you know that over the weekend, when the temperatures dipped below 40F, it took an extra tenth of a second or so for my car to start due to the cold battery.
And for additional atrocity, I needed to inflate all four of my tires an additional 3 psi due to the PV=nRT.
So I'll have you know it's not all shorts, sandals, and cups of drank down here.
Well, it is, but there's also the need for a light fleece or jacket in the mornings/evenings.
Some days.
I disagree, sir.

maybe he meant southern California
I was just in Encinada, and Tijuana, and SD, and LA.
1.) yall got fatburger in CA. This is advantage, bro.
2.) the above cities party so good.
3.) when driving from LAX, we ran over a GIANT rubber sex toy. Did anyone lose a giant rubber penis (with balls) on the 405?

Had to reschedule to a flight that stopped in LV (nice). Then drive from LA to SD to pick up stuff...and then to Mexico deep...DEEP into the night.
Awake 26hrs on 3hrs of sleep.
Slept 4hrs after eating MASSIVE amounts of tacos at some roadside place in Encinada.
Then up again for a (potentially) 36hr race.
LOL. we were going like 10mph. It was huge. Almost stopped the car.

This weekend is going to be that one we get every year where the temperature is shockingly high (thanks global warming). The highs on Fri-Mon are in the mid to upper 50's...which means it's time for the S to come out and play for a few days!
I'm salivating with excitement.

Lol, good luck man. Rocks don't always fly straight back. I've had plenty come at me from all sorts of angles. Also, what is a safe distance to not get hit? You can't even hear or feel if you're getting hit, half the time.
You're better off waiting a few more months (as painful as it sounds) than end up looking at irreversible rock chips, on a car that's supposed to be a toy only. But hey, your car! Just don't complain after!
