I do have a long term lady (first girl that's ever not annoyed me into breaking up after 3 months). She was manufactured in NY...but doesn't wanna live IN a city.
I wouldn't live in the sticks, though. Gotta be near something. We were looking at houses close to downtown areas in the burbs.
And I don't want land. If I have grass, I'll likely pour concrete over most of it and/or trade my lawn mower for a barell of weed killer. I feel sorry for dudes that spend every beautiful day walking a zig zag path in their lawn behind a mower.
I am probably the worst candidate for home owner material haha.

Town
House
No lawn care or outdoor care at all, get all the other upsides of homes, only downside is you (might) share one wall with someone else.
#9362
Meh. That would mean ownership AND sharing a wall.
I can rent and share a wall . Everyone in the burbs is OBSESSED with "keeping it down".
Probably try for a house in a near-city suburb or something. My friend lives in a house near the city and he has a pretty sweet setup. Brick house. Detached garage (must have). And you're in the city within 10-20mins. You so close that you can almost smell the gun violence.

I love being a homeowner. Plus I have about an acre of land so it's funny to see people's reactions when I drive around my property in the truck not giving a shit

I have a bunch of friends in townhomes and none have that restriction...just gotta know what you're getting yourself into.

Yes but with owning, you're not paying someone else's mortgage. Can always keep it as a rental property in the future for more "I want a new car" income.

Townhome and maybe sharing one wall? I'm thinking more like maybe sharing 2...definitely sharing one.
Not too much of a pain to get them up there...I had them on the upper shelf of the side shelving and I had to lift these 50 pound awkward things over the garage door rail so this actually seems really easy for me. If I put them any lower, they'd be in the way and it would kinda defeat the purpose of getting them up off the ground, at least for me. I'm pretty robust though, good workout...I have a solid a frame little giant, I lift them up over my head, rest on top run, position myself then lift into place.

our HOA walk around and see if your parking permit is "properly" displayed.
If it is displayed but not "properly" then you get towed...
or your exterior light is not bright enough... then you get fined.
Who decides and measures the brightness?
#9376
Team Owner
HOA decides on brightness. And because they're the brightest, they can easily measure inadequate brightness.
#9377
Then dismantle their organization and leave a giant void of power that was for the taking for the most barbaric and ruthless group.
Duh.

My subdivision doesn't have a HOA. There are some covenants we have to abide by but they're all crazy like you can't have a hot tub by the mailbox and you can't have a dump truck in the backyard...things that it sounds like people have tried before
Country living ftw.

Some of the ones other people describe are ridiculous. I'd move if that were the case.

I once had a lady on the board tell me that she wouldn't sell me another 2 clickers for the gate for my (and my roomate's) girlfriends because "they have no business being here if the homeowner isn't home". Never again will I live somewhere where you have to have the pizza delivery call from the gate and give a passcode...
there was also a bylaw that prohibited washing your car on your own driveway. WTF.
The lady that told me that died in her townhouse and nobody thought to check up on her for like a week. I mean, Karma and all, but I wouldn't say that because mean.

Sam, you're doing it all wrong. What you do is find out where the HOA members live and lock their doors from the outside (metal brackets, heavy duty screws, etc). Piss them off until they quit or move away!!

Ehhh I've been to the country. I couldn't live in the country. Its not for me.
I can play nice and be reasonable with reasonable HOA's. I'm very clean, and my shit is always put the way it should be anyway. I just don't want to be harassed. That's when I become unreasonable AF and focus every effort into infuriating the person and finding loopholes to be a jerk. Like I did with my current HOA for a while.
Then they started sending letters to my landlord after re-writing their rules to close off their loopholes. My landlord is such a nice lady. I don't want there to be any conflict there.

huh? I have no issues with my HOA, it's pretty minimal for a HOA in terms of rules and restrictions. They've been great for all the homes in our neighborhood. Last time we had a big storm, they contracted out and paid for all the brush disposal and what not.

I bought a townhome back in August and I have no problems with my HoA. And neighbors are a non-issue because my unit is a corner unit and I don't hear anything on the other side.
Yeah mortgages and HoA fees suck but I didn't want to settle for renting and essentially throwing my money away. So I waited until I was in the right situation with the necessary funds needed and I ended up searching the market for two years until I found the one. Thankfully my car build was pretty much complete, and the car itself was paid off back in December. One negative though is that the future of having a Focus RS is pushed back but let's get real here, folks - a home is more important than a car.
I wanted to move to a town/city with a bigger "restaurant scene" and "nightlife" and one that had easy access to the "real" downtown (Chicago) - a la the "drink train" aka Metra which takes you down on a 45 minute "booze cruise" as you can legally consume alcohol and say "thank God for a DE" (designated [train] engineer). Another cool thing of this particular Drink Train line is that it's where we (the posse [just kidding, the boss]) get off at Irving Park to go watch the Cubs (and man we are always quite thirsty when doing so). Also passes good 'ol Logan Square and Division St. for any more excuses to consume. And that's before getting to the Loop! This is all easily possible thanks to Uber where we spend a mere $5.50 for a ride to the train station, and vice versa. $11 for a no-nonsense-never-worry-about-driving assurance plan? Yes, bitte! Prosit! And that's even if you just want to go out to a restaurant and nightlife in our little town. If you want to just catch a meal, fine, 5 minute drive away.
In the end I know I made the right choice. Tongue-in-cheek aside, it was the right decision.
TL;DR buy a home if you can afford it. Buy an S2k if you can't afford a home. Buy your gf a diamond if you can afford both a home and an S2k.

Been looking at places in downtown Geneva and in Niles. Geneva is a bit out there geographically...but I like the area a lot. And most of the people that live there near downtown are a little hippy dippy. Plus Jenny McCarthy lives here and she has a HUGE crush on me like omg.
