I’m willing to say this morning I witnessed the highest value car spot in history. These three cars have an estimated combined value of around €450 million. That is not an exaggeration. Outside @royalautomobileclub at 5am was parked Sir Stirling Moss’ Mercedes Benz 300SLR which he piloted to victory at the Mille Miglia, his British Grand Prix winning W196R (essentially a single seater open wheel version of the Mille Miglia car), and his personal 300SL Gullwing that he used to recce the Mille Miglia before the race.
For those who doubt the value of these cars, remember two things. Not only are they truly irreplaceable, but also the 300SLR Ulenhaut Coupe sold for a record €135 million, and that was essentially a very similar car, but one of two and with no racing history or success. However don’t forget that he will never sell the front two race cars (the Gullwing is privately owned).
