No offical word on specs yet but there are a lot of new engines coming to BMW's lineup including several turbos. From what I've read the E90 lineup will be as follows:

318i
320i
323i
325i
330i
318d
320d
325d
330d
335d

I don't know if any of the diesels will make it to the US. One other thing to note, the 325i and 330i are not going to be the same engines that can be found in the E46. The 325i will be making 200+ hp and the 330i will be somewhere north of 250hp with rumors of it being somewhere in the 275 range.

EDIT: Just found this which claims the new 330i will put out 258hp.

I presume it remains a 3.0L eng? The site doesn't say but could it have grown to 3.2 perhaps?

I doubt you'll anything other than 325, 330, 425 and 430 (4 series is the coupe) in the US. The overall engine design stays the same as the current one with the same displacement but the HP ratings go up to 215 and 258 (there are changes such as more use of aluminum, magnesium, Valvetronic and bunch of other details).
Both of the current engines are/were probably somewhat under-rated.
Most of the performance will depend on weight - which unfortunately for BMW has always been on the high side.

Not in the US, maybe Canada. One of the reasons the 1/2 series has been killed off so far in the US is that BMWNA doesn't want to cheapen the image by having any 4 cyl cars in the line up. The only thing I can see maybe making the lineup down the road is the 330D. I doubt BMW would bring over more than one diesel and the 3.0L would be the natural choice since then they could sell it in the 330 and 530.

I am starting to get a little jealous. For a bit more a nicely equpped 325i could have been my future car. But oh well, when my parents were looking into buying they wanted a car at that time, not now. But this will take over the A4 as my favorite "rip-off/sports sedan for 35k" (a4, c-class, 3 series, 9-3). But for that price, one could move up to a TL, G35, or even the new CTS or 300C if they chose to put their hands in the reliability of an American car .

I might be wrong...but...I read that BMW was dumping the whole 4-series idea, and just leaving it as a 3-series coupe. It was in one of the big three Auto mags not too long ago, under their news section.

That might have changed, however...

It depends on where you get your info. The coupe will be at least 6 months behind the sedan and things could change by then but most of the current news points to all two door versions (except the M3) to be badged as 4 series. The naming convention issue should be settled when the coupe version of the 1 series comes out.

Yeah...I wish that BMW would just announce it already. I think this whole name switching is a little rediculous.

My least favorite is how MB switched their numbering system. Why didn't they just leave it? It was logical. Take the C230 for example. It really doesn't have a 2.3 liter engine. Why not just call it the C180 Kompressor? Or the C240...has a 2.6 liter engine...why not call it the C260?

You would think that with all the engine choices and changes going on makers that have some sort of link between model and engine size would have changed by now. I think I saw a C260 the other day. Of course around here you see a lot more choice than the US.
