The Official BMW 3-Series Discussion Thread
so i dont have time to read through 100 pages in this thread but am considering getting a new 328xi or a 335xi.
thoughts on whether the 335xi engine is worth spending the extra $? any other feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hands down - 335. It's not even close in terms of performance.
Comparing our 335xi to loaner 328's, the 335 kicks their butts!! Go with the twin turbo engine and don't look back!
thanks all, i'm going to test drive to the 328 also just to see how that performs, i'm coming from a tsx so either the 328 or 335 will be step up in hp.
saying that i know how i am, or have been with every car in the past, i am never satisfied with the cars "as is" and start modding them to get them where i want them to be. this new car is the going to be the first one that going into it i am telling myself i am not changing anything on it. therefor i am thinking i should go with a car that comes more hooked up from the dealer. which is why i am leaning towards a nicely equipped 335....

Between 328 and 335. A 328 is 230 HP/200 ft-lbs. tq., a 335i is running 300HP/300 ft-lbs. of tq.
By way of comparison, a 1G TSX is at 205HP/164 ft-lbs. of tq.
a 2G TSX (4 cyl) is at 201HP/172 ft-lbs. of tq.
So, there is a noticeable difference between the TSX and the 328, but the next step up to the 335 is SIGNIFICANT. First time you put your foot into the 335 you'll realize just how different those cars are (not to mention the new 335is option which gets you a few more horses with an ECU flash still under warranty from the factory).

I received an e-mail about the new 4 cylinder engine, which links to the blurb below. I thought I'd include it for general interest. Still, I'm sorry to see the naturally aspirated inline six vanishing.
Astonishing power meets incredible efficiency in our new 4-cylinder engine.
The new 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine is one fierce powerhouse and will make its American debut in the Z4 sDrive28i. Despite its small size, it's still unrivaled in performance. In fact, it boasts 260 lb-ft of torque, which is 30% more than its 6-cylinder equivalent. The maximum output of its 240-hp is achieved at 5,000 rpm – that's 1,500 rpm lower than a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. Encased in an all-aluminum crankcase, it's also lighter and more compact. Plus, the combination of TwinPower Turbo technology and higher torque even increases its efficiency. With powerful and efficient performance like this, our smallest engine will surely take your breath away.

+1 on the night and day difference of a 328 and 335. If you do end up getting a 328 get it in a manual. The auto tranny's in the 328 are different in the 335 and just feel S L O W. This is fact for model years 2007-2009 not sure about 2010-11.
The 335's are also a lot more mod'able.
Good luck!
