Off-brand conventional oil

Would you guys ever trust store brand or off-brand oil? Sounds like a stupid question, but I just got to thinking about it last time I did an oil change. I noticed my local auto parts store sells their own brand of conventional motor oil, with a claim on the back label saying it "exceeds standards for Honda Genuine conventional oil" so it just got me thinking, especially considering I hear most Honda Genuine oil filters are just ordinary Fram filters.... right? So perhaps the oil itself wouldn't be some unacheivable concoction.. Not to mention there's all the talk about how most fluids come from the same refineries, even if they're sporting different brands, different claims, etc.

So Iunno, would you guys trust it? 5 quarts of it would save me about $6 over the name brands, and if it's the same quality stuff, then.....? I'm sure synthetic would be a different ball park, so I'm just considering this as far as conventional motor oil only.

I could trust it for a short OCI under 5k with a top quality filter. Walmart's homegrown synthetic is actually pretty good from what I hear. BITOG will tell you the same thing.

Is the savings really that much of an offset, probably not.

As long as it has an API label like one of these, it's fine.

You could always look up the MSDS on it and see who bottled it if you're really curious
