Next Car? Options?

To make things short, I'm planning on getting a new car for college. I'm looking for a car for just the 4 years that I'm there and it will be driven during the school year only to and from school and home, and during the summer around town here at my home. I've looked at a few cars and even tho these aren't the only 2 I'm lookin at, I just wanted to get some opinions from all of you on these two specific cars: 2006 Volkswagen GTI, 2005 Dodge SRT-4. So...what do you think, or which would u rather be driving and why?

GTI.

Solid feeling car, fun to drive.

SRT-4 also fun, but I dont like the layout inside, you have to reach for the shifter. I wouldnt they are unreliable, but I would say the build quality is much less solid.

The GTI is great all around. Its comfortable for a hatchback, and is even a nice car inside. Plus it looks much better, I'd probably driving that before a Neon. Its just that bad. I can overcome the stigma of Miatas being chick cars and queermobiles, but Neons are just so bad that you would never see me driving an SRT-4.

If you want a car to mod to just go fast though, the SRT-4 is gonna be cheaper. The 2.4 I4 has DSM roots built into it. Still, my pick doesn't change.

If living on campus then i say get a shitty car that you wont if it gets messed up.

Otherwise GTI would be fun!

I know most of you will favor the 2006 Honda Civic Si or any model of the Acura RSX Type-S over the GTI and the SRT-4, but how do you think those compare to the GTI alone? Also, throw in the Cobalt SS. How does that stack up? The responses on the SRT-4 were resoundingly similar to what I expected to hear. To simplify this question, how would u rank these 5 cars (SRT-4, GTI, RSX Type-S, Cobalt SS, and Civic Si) and if you could give an explaination it would be greatly appreciated. I really want to check out some cars within the next couple of weeks and I was just looking for some opinions on what to look for in the 5.

I'm going to be living on campus at the University of Illinois. Maybe getting an SRT-4 wouldn't be a bad idea after all. It just needs to last me 4-6 years tops. Or maybe I can look for a decent early to mid 90's Nissan 300ZX?

I am far from a neon fanboy, but one of my coworkers has a tweaked SRT-4 that's putting roughly 290 hp to the wheels.

It's more fun to drive than any GTI I've found (and I have another coworker with a supercharged 83 GTI).

I can't believe I'm saying this, but
SRT-4 FTW

Cobalt SS is supposed to be a great a car. I wouldnt knock it at this point. And I take it over the SRT4.

I love the Civic Si, but I think the GTI is a great car as well. I would still probably take the GTI given the serious choice, not sure...I do love the Si a lot.

RSX is nice as well, just never cared about it much.

One major thing to keep in mind:

Insurance..

RSX will kill you, i imagine the SRT-4 will as well. GTI's always struck me as having a more mature demographic

290whp? Cant be the stock turbo, is it?

Anyways, to be fair you would have to drive a modded GTI as well. One in this decade I mean.

I too would rather get the Colbalt SS over the SRT4.

Whats your price range?

I don't think "stock" SRT-4's exist anymore but yeah, it's definitely not stock, very refined for what it is though. Originally bought and modified by a guy who wanted to get into autocrossing. He built the car, but never actually got it to the track.

After the pains I went through with my Scirocco (otherwise known as the hole in my driveway that I threw money into) I would never recommend another VW product to anyone, not even people I didn't like.

When I got to college, I sold my CL-S (due to nearing 100k miles, plus the tranny already shat on me) and wanted to get my G35. Instead, I decided to save some of the cash and go w/ a cheaper car, and wound up w/ an '01 prelude for $12k. I must say, it was the best choice for me at the time, and I'm glad I did it. You might want to look into something with a few years on it and save your cash until you graduate...just my

I bought a 2006 miata GT with leather and the works for $18K out the door. And my insurance went down about 30%.

All your other choices are FWD, with the MX5 you get RWD and a ragtop + excellent handling.

Chose something you can carry lots of stuff in, including a few friends.
Unless things have changed, parking down there is a pita and it may be easier to not have a car on campus.

A hatch would be handy for moving furniture and electronics around...plus all the other crap you'll want to move back and forth or purchase every so often.

GTI is an awesom car. with a 500 dollar chip you can get around 240-250 hp on all stock stuff without any problems what so ever and around 300torque. thats amazing if you ask me. if you need more info go to www.vwvortex.com and look for yourself. GTI over a neon any time

What chip were u looking at? Or could u find one for me? I'd probably sell my rims if I were to get a GTI cuz I like those stock ones that kinda look like the Gallardo rims (the ovally 5 spoke ones) and 240-250 hp off of a 500 dollar mod would be the route I'd choose along with intake and maybe tint, then thats all...So yeah if anyone could find me the right chip for about an 06 GTI, that would be fantastic...Would this be comparable to what u were referring to?:
