basically when your approaching a stop sign or a stop light, turn the car off, and just "coast/glide" in! do this at all the stops, and folks are reporting some decent mpg!

Lol, I can't believe people are actually trying this, it wont save that much gas, you're better off coasting it in drive. I can pull of 35mpg in the TL in any suburb.

Actually I admit I did this one time. I had just gotten my license and was driving my moms car. It was 12 at night and in NC when you first get your license your not supposed to drive past 9. So I dropped my friend off at her house and my moms car is flashing E. I accelerated so slowly I had to move into the turning lane to let cars pass. Whenever at lights I would turn off the car. So when I got to the top of my neighborhood I turned off the car put it in N and glided to my driveway. Believe it or not it made it all the way to the driveway without needed to be started. Althought no power steering sucked. My mom actually made it to the gas station the next morning.

isn't it true that everytime you start your car... it eats up a lot of gas? so, in the case, after you come to a complete stop... and have to move again....you'd start your car... thus end up use more gas

before my 06TL, I had an 88 Ranger that turned off whilst driving down the road. It did it several times going 50-60 mph. That's what I referred to as 'taking the exciting way home'.

I dated a dumbass in high school who, in some totally misguided attempt to impress, turned off his Jeep Wrangler & took the key out of the ignition while driving. He kinda freaked when he realized he couldn't steer. He didn't last too long.

Was his name Kevin?

A Lt in my regt did the same thing, albeit in a Suzuki Samuri, going down a mountain. First corner he hit, right off the switchback. He was OK, but the skuzi was pretty much written off.

No, and thankfully we were just on the quiet little streets of suburbia, TX.

That what I was led to believe. It sounds pretty dangerous. what happens if for some reason you need to accelerate??

like I stated in my post above... I believe you actually use quite a bit when you first start up your car.... which is why I don't even bother turning off my car if I have to run back in the house to get something really quick...

one time my alternator blew at like 2am. And i was at the near the top of the main street that is at an slight grade for about 2 miles. So me and my friends pushed my car a few blocks just to the top then all hopped in, and coasted the whole way. luckily I only went through like 2 red lights, out of like 20. My city was one of those that shuts down at like 9pm, so I didn't see another car the entire way back.

then had to push my car another like 2 blocks to my house, now that's how you save some gas

I've heard that European drivers will shut their engines off even at red lights to save gas. Don't know if that's true or not, or even if it works ...

edit: and doesn't the Prius do the start/stop engine thing pretty frequently?

Why don't people do this but keep the engine on. I still see a ton of idiots apply their brakes last second to an already still red light full of stopped traffic which wastes gas and adds wear to the brakes. I mean if you see the light changing from a distance to red and you know its long light, then just coast to the light (w/ engine on) as long as your not holding up traffic. Makes sense to me.

BTW: Turning off your engine saves gas only if the car is off longer than 30 seconds.

Thats how I get such good gas mileage even in areas with a lot of lights. Coasting to red lights with the engine on is a free way to boast your gas mileage while decreasing vehicle wear.

all that does is waste more gas when starting the engine. then there is the starter wear, and then the contact from the starter to the flywheel.

if i am in a drive thru i will turn off the car if i am going to sit for a few minutes

I saw that on the news as well. I believe the guy claimed he got a good 45mpg out of his SUV. I'd imagine shutting off the engine and cranking it back on numerous times a day would eventually shorten the life of the "starter".
I think it's a ridiculous idea, why bother getting a SUV if you cannot afford the gas?! People DO NOT need a Suburban or a huge SUV to get around. I grew up with dad driving a simple ford sedan
Just because some family have 4 kids doesn't mean you cannot fit them all in the back of your TL or civic

I was on the highway driving a friend's truck, because he was drunk, and he got pissed when I told him he wasn't getting his keys back tonight, so he reached over and pulled them out at about 70 mph. That was interesting. Thankfully he gave them back quickly.

Sometimes if I'm going downhill I will shift it into neutral and coast down.

If you're that upset over gas, then don't get an enormous SUV that gets 10 mpg. DUH

I just when I hear someone with an SUV whining about gas.

I don't think they shut the engine down while coasting, but they do shut if off when you're stopped.

I'm pretty sure they shut off under a certain MPH if their is battery power available.

Turning off your car to coast is the stupidest thing i've ever heard.. shift to neutral anyone?
