Canada is the suck, geez.

What about going to down to NY, negotiating and buying a car at a great price there and bringing it back? Even with that crazy tax you have to pay, if you get a good enough price it should offset that no? I know a producer from Toronto who says thats how he buys his cars.

But then I'm getting into the whole warranty issue. US warranties aren't covered up here IIRC. although its been a couple of years since I looked into it.

depends on the manufacturer some will honor it. There's a pretty big thread on Red Flag deals about it. While used, my bro did buy a vehicle through our very own Shoofin and saved a bundle versus buying here, but alas that particular vehicle was outside of warranty so that was not an issue.

LOL, so the cars I'm looking at. Honda, Kia, VW have no coverage. Everyone else sort of does but there are limitations.

Nice concise list, too bad none of the cars your interested in would be applicable.

So finally test drove the EX Turbo at lunch. Plenty of power, more than enough. Steering was nicely weighted and tight but you really couldn't tell what the fronts tires were doing. Still very impressed with the interior quality of the car. To my eyes only the Mazda 6 and Passat measure up as far as material quality goes.

They knocked 3K off the price right away, for a total of $33,800. Should be able to do better.

So have you completely ruled out the 6? If so, what were your reasons?

IIRC, it was a "not enough power, too much noise" issue that ruled out the 6.

Mostly yes. Otherwise its a hell of a car. I thought the interior quality was top notch. Looks great, obviously. I just think I want to settle for a 4 banger. The loudness at throttle though was no different than any other mid size 4 out there so its not unique to the 6. And the fact that it doesn't have a CVT is a huge plus.

A bit expensive up here too. A GS model, no leather, 17's is $32.900 on the road. and like the Accord has shitty finance offers because its a hot seller.

I'm guessing the GS is equivalent to the US Sport trim?
If so, wow that's a big price gap. Completely loaded the Sport is only $27k here.

ya we usually pay more....sometimes the trim levels offer different equipment so sometimes its not necessarily an apples to apples comparison. I.e I find in luxury cars heated seats etc are usually standard and are options in the US.

True. I've noticed you can get the top trim, Grand Touring here, with a 6MT
If it were available here like that, it'd make decisions a little easier.

Anyone know if Premium is a must in VW's 3.6? I was able to wiggle another $500 off the price of a Passat but don't ant the 2.5. Nor do I want to pay 15 cents more per litre of Premium. VW's site states. "Premium fuel recommended for maximum performance"

Cheapo I know.

What I've read, it won't blow it up.

My issue is the finance rates on the TDI are higher, as in not 0% like the 2.5 and 3.6. I could go down to a base model to get the TDI to save money but I'd rather not. I just can't mentally justify paying more than the 3.6 than the TDI.

IIRC, you will only lose "performance" by not running the higher octane.

It should not have ill consequences to the engine or engine components.

...but then again why are you wanting to buy the higher performance 3.6, to only "dumb it down" with the lower octane?

You cheap bastard!!!

....oh wait, I was thinking per /gallon not that Canadian litre nonsense.

That's a $2.50 extra per tank versus $8.50.....hmmmmm

That does add up a bit.

If I do 60 litres per week, its 15 cents per litre more X 52 weeks = $468 per year.

You shouldn't have an issue. the pcm might retard the timing a touch and maybe cost you 5-10hp not the end of the world for a commuter.

I'm all too familiar, but thankfully past that stage.

Speaking of premium vs. regular. It is one of the reasons I picked a car that didn't spec premium. I always put premium into my TL and never cared much about the $0.20 price difference, but over the past year I've kept noticing that the price different kept increasing. 24 cents, then 30 cents, now I'm noticing many stations with a 40 cent or even 50 cent spread.

Thanks Fibs. What are Michagan state taxes like? even at 27K I still have to pay Ont tax at 13% which brings me to 31K plus any fees. I can get a new one here for ~37ish.

Looking a couple of demo's that I hope I can get for closer to to 33K.

Either way my wife is now without a car and pissed I can't make up my mind. Should i buy her and the kids a bus pass?

6% Michigan Sales Tax. You should do it.

I can see you graduated with an English major along with Mr. Illach.

Insurance might be a challenge but that would certainly save you some money.

Though if you buy it and register it in Ontario, you shouldn't have to pay Michigan's sales tax.

? How does that work in Michigan? Here in Ontario we have to pay taxes at the time of purchase. Meaning anyone who buys something in Ontario pays the dealer that 7% provincial tax.

I don't think the math works. I think it will cost me at least 33-34K going that route. And then have no warranty. With the Accord being a first year build I may really need that warranty.

If your from out of state the dealer does not collect tax and you do not owe any tax. When you import the vehicle into canada you will pay your tax at the border crossing on the value, so there are no "tax" savings going that route, just the difference in MRSP, and you loose the option to finance/lease, so you have to pay cash up-front.

I should add Dom that I did this when I bought my boat down in Indiana, dealer gave me temp plates from the trailer and i did not have to pay any sort of US tax. I did have to pay GST on the boat and HST on the trailer at Canada customs. The trailer is treated the same as a car would be, so I had to do the whole RIV thing and get it inspected at Canadian Tire. Whole process was pretty easy if your seriously considering going that route I can give more details as to the process.

Thanks, just not crazy about the idea of no warranty in Canada. Can't see myself wanting to go this route. If the saving were 10K, maybe but they won't be. Not to mention a Honda dealer in the US won't even sell me the car.
