Here is an old pic of that car
Autologic also had this NSX at the track day which I got a ride in. The driver (not the owner) had never drove on a road coarse before and we spun out throwing rocks on that 993's new paint. What a ride! The owner sure was pissed he owns the NSX and 993.

Yep, they stopped making the "type 911" in 1989, but the 911 name went on as a "marketing" thing...
The 911 was almost named the 901, but ahh... google:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_901
Back in the old days you had the 912, the 4 cly. version of the 911, and off course there was the 930 (turbo model)...
It' all stems from the relationship between porsche and vw... The beetle is the type 1, the bus the type 2 (type2 T1 = splitty, type2 T2=baywindow, type2 T3=vanagon), the thing was the type 141, hmmm I forget what the Karman Ghia was (type 14 maybe?? there was a type 34 ghia)....
The Cayenne is Type 955... You can see the "911" progression here:

Peugeot objected to Porsche using any three digit number where the middle number was 0, having already sold many models with that scheme, and owning the naming rights.
So, Porsche simply replaced the middle 0 with a 1, and called the new car Porsche 911 before the first cars were delivered.

The 4S models are widebodies just like the turbo model, but the engine isn't turbocharged and they don't have the turbo wing on the back. The 2S models were the regular "base" model Carrera with the widebody (but without the turbo brakes that the 4S and turbo models)...
There's also the RS models (RennSpeed), and GT2, GT3, etc... this post could go on for awhile...
Goto the link that I posted before, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche#Consumer_models and click on the model (993, 996, etc) and then click on variants...

It nice to see that Porsche has so many variations on the same theme. They aren't really a big company either. It would be like Acura offering TL or RL's in RWD, SH-AWD, widebodies, turbos, and convertible versions
