My company is moving, need car advice.
New Commute:
80 miles per day (40 one way)
400 per week, add 100 for weekends.
Figure approx 24-26K per year.
Put yourself in my shoes for a minute.....
Looks like I am finally going to have to finance a car after 4 leases. In this shitty economy with gas through the roof what car would you buy that is:
A sedan, safe (for highway driving), great fuel economy & under 30K.
Thoughts and opinions?
So far Accord EX-L, Toyota Camry & Nissan Altima come to mind but I'm open for other suggestions.

I test drove the Accord, Camry & Altima but it just didn't feel like the right time to pull the trigger.
I wish honda would do an APR special on the Accord I'd buy one if they ran a 2.9 or 1.9 like Toyota and Nissan has done in the past.
Now with the job moving I have to do something. :sigh:

Buy a reliable beater. If you get a new car, you're going to kill the value of it in one year. For instance, you can buy a Maxima or something similar for about $10K and run it for 3 years without too much problem and save some cash.
I'm considering buying another used I35 because they are really cheap, comfortable and reliable. Plus we just put 40K on one in the last 18 months with minor issues.
If you have to get a new car, I think the options you have listed are good. How about a hybrid?

If it's 6-cylinder, I'd go for the Camry.

on to the next one...
Hybrid's, while a viable option, work best in city driving.
If the 80 mile commute is highway (and I hope to god it is for your sake), look into a deisel.
Personally, I'm not a fan of VW's, but, perhaps a TDi Jetta that get's 50+ mpg.

camrys aren't what they once were, i wouldn't touch one now.
I'd go with an Accord 4 banger or possibly even snag a good deal on remaining 08 TSX's. The dealerships will be wanting to get rid of their stock soon since the 09's will be out.

What Would Don Draper Do?
of the cars you listed, i would just get the one i can get the best deal for.
you've driven all three extensively, haven't you? and it doesn't seem like one stands out from the other two.
can you swing a deal for an 08 tsx?

If not then Acura is actually offering 0.9% financing on their TL and TL-S models.

I'm sure he could get a non navi for about $27k any day of the week. Now that they want to start getting rid of them, might even be able to hit just under $27k.
do some shopping around and get some prices... its the only way to find out.

Hmm I would go either with a used TSX or a new accord/camry/altima. European the only cars that get that kind of gas mileage is Audi which will be expensive new or Saab which probably won't hold up that well with all those miles.

but i'm putting myself in eclipse's shoes and i'm getting the impression that he wants a new car.

good call however...
figure a new one goes for $29500 out the door (inc. tax)
48 months @ 0.9% is $625/ mo
60 months @ 2.9% is $528/ mo
used 07 you'll have a much harder time finding
but say you found one for $24995 with 8k miles
talk um down to $24000 + tax and you're looking at about $26k
48 months @ 6.5% is $616/ mo
60 months @ 6.9% is $513/ mo
your really not saving much because you're repaying so much in interest.
is a car with 5-10k miles already on it (and harder to find in sheer #'s) worth $10 bucks a month?
Not IMO. Plus you can choose your colors and whatnot as opposed to just taking what is out there in the used market... which isn't much.
