My final verdict is to say either a New 08 TSX (if you don't mind premium gas) or new 08 Accord EX-L (87 oct)... and finance either one for 60 months @ 2.9% with American Honda Finance.

2.9? Where the hell did you see that being advertised? I checked their site today I didn't see that.

A 4-cylinder that takes regular gas. Used. Nothing to be afraid of when buying used as long as you do your research and gather all of the history and maintenance/repair reports. Does it *have* to be brand new?
Civic, Fit, Altima, Accord, Corolla, Mazda 3......
The only thing I'd worry about in the Fit is the engine----I know they upped the power, but when I test drove the '07, it was very slow to get up to highway speed. It was pretty scary, to the point where I wondered if I'd feel safe merging from a start to high speeds on a regular basis.
Do you like the job enough to actually want to do that commute, every day, over a long period of time, and will it justify (or offset) the cost of "needing" to buy a new car?

Since you are going to rack up miles getting a new car wouldnt be a good idea. I have owned 5 maximas over the years and my suggestion would be to get an 00-01 Maxima with the 3.0 V6. Its got plenty of power for your needs/commute, my anniversary addition maxima use to return as much as 30~35 mpg on highway.

but do the 00-01's also come standard with HIDs?
that was a big thing for me when i considered buying a 5.5g maxima after getting into an accident recently.

I don't know what the traffic is like but 40 miles could be an hour or more each way.
I would get the most comfortable car with the best gas mileage available. I was going to say that diesel is out but ...
The list of gas sedans:
Honda Fit - 37mpg Hwy (auto Sport)
Honda Civic - 40mpg Hwy (auto)
Mini Cooper - 37mpg Hwy (auto)
Nissan Altima - 34mpg Hwy (auto)
Diesel:
VW Jetta TDi - mid-50s Hwy (according to VW).
That's a pretty significant difference.
Gas: $3.33/gal x 26,000 miles/yr @ 35mpg (avg gas sedan) = $2474/yr in gas
Diesel: $4.00/gal x 26,000 miles/yr @ 50mpg (Jetta) = $2080/yr in diesel.
Only question is how much more is the diesel Jetta than a gas one and is $394/yr going to pay itself off any time soon.

it's close by for you and it's auto for teh philly traffic.
if you are planning on putting on miles, i would go the used car route. if you plan on keeping a car for a few years and adding all those miles, you would lose more $$$ on the new car compared to the used one. esp if it is mainly going to be used for work

if you're considering a 7th gen accord, be careful. there has been known issues with the seat rails breaking so the seat moves forward a bit and backward under acceleration / deceleration. honda isn't acknowledging the problem, so if it does break when ur out of warranty, ur out ~$800 bucks to get it fixed. The fix also does not guarantee it won't break again.

Anyways, I would definitely opt for a diesel like many others are saying, but with the instability and skyrocketing prices of it, the benefit may outweigh the cost here soon depending on just how much MPG's the particular diesel you are looking at gets. Diesels always last forever though, so
I say either a high MPG diesel or something like an accord/civic (or a TSX )

New Civic Si sedan?
As much as I want rwd with torque...I still really love this car.
If not I'm in on the TDI vote...and there is a new one coming.

Diesel prices to poised toskyrocket and make diesel sipping cars more expensive than their gasoline fueld cousins to run.
Consider the 4cyl Sonota? 2.4L Limiteds can be had for sub 20K or wait for the 09 with the better interior and pay maybe 2-3K more. Alot of car for the money and Consumer reports is fond of them though not quite the car the Accord or Camry are.

Altima 2.5SL. You can buy one for 22ish now with the current incentives. They have a $1000 rebate and 3.9% financing. Dealers are usually willing to sell for 1000 under invoice in addition to the incentives.

If you're going to go new, it's hard to beat an Accord, TSX or Civic...
Or you could just buy an old civic and use that to commute and keep your gas guzzling suv to use on weekends
edit: I like the Honda Fit too, but I'd only own one if I had a weekend sportscar (s2k, vette, porsche, etc)
