Mustang Project...Getting Started

My father has a 1966 Mustang 289 4spd coupe that he's owned since 1968. This car has extreme sentimental value to him and until recently it's been hands off. My father and I are close and what's his is mine and mine his. I've started doing some work to this car, but it's comming along pretty slow as I have other interests and many of my own projects like my house and my jeep and I lack the garage space for this car. My goal is to get this vehicle in good road condition so I can take it out for a cruise once in a while.

So far, it has 5leaf reverse-eye HD springs in the rear and a full exhaust with long tube headers. Other than that, 100% stock. I'm not looking to make a hot rod out of this car, just a cruiser. I believe it has some collector value and don't really want to modify it to much. Thanks for reading and here are the pics:

Looks good

Is that all original or has some stuff been redone (interior and paint)?

body looks great. but you lucky son of guns don't live in the rust belt. so if that Mustang was in Ohio for 40 years it would look like swiss cheese by now.

Wow...very nice. The interior looks lovely.

What else is needed to get this thing "road worthy"?

The interior is all original with the exception of the carpet. The heater cores in these cars have a bad habit of cracking open and pouring coolant onto the passengers feet and ruining the carpet. The A/C works, but the compressor needs a belt. The car is not totally rust free. The door skins are rusting out from the inside and need to be repalced. I'm pretty sure this is from rain and washing.

To make this car driveable on the street, it needs wheels and tires, a carb rebuild, a new gas tank, and a brake job. It starts and runs pretty well, but I have no confidence to drive it anywhere other than around the block.

Looks like it's in decent shape overall. Some fresh paint and possibly cleaning up of the body for any rust should get things looking in great shape.

Here are a few pics. I dont want to clog up your thread with my car so I picked the ones that I liked the best. Again, I'm kinda pissed I didnt take before pics but not much I can do about it now.

The car was bought from a longtime friend of the family (I believe she was the original owner, have to double check that). Original color was that ugly gold, it was repainted british racing green. I dropped it off at my friends shop and told him what I wanted done body wise. He took it down to the metal and started over with it. He blended a few reds and I decided to choose the one thats on the car (obviously). He sprayed silver down before the red, though I think a gold layer would have made the color shine a little better. After three long years I got the body back and started with everything else.

I pulled seats out of a lebaron because they had the shoulder harness integrated into the seats. I also pulled the rear seats and had black leather put on both.

There are a few areas where the body needs a little work, well, the paint needs a little work (rock chips only). My body/paint guy has since retired. He sprayed for 20 years without ever wearing a mask and got lung cancer and no longer does anything with cars. I cant find anyone that can match the color.

Anyway, here are more pics.

I had him also color match the wheels. From the factory they were gold

Here you can see how much the paint has already faded in the four years I've had it on the road. Its not as bad as it looks in the picture, but you can see it doesnt quite have the same kind of depth that it used to.

That is a nice car. I wish ours was a vert.

I apprecaite original cars but I'm not really a fan of the look. I wanna drop ours alot and put 17"wheels on it. I'm not gonna do any mods that I can't "undo," but I think the old cars look so much better when they sit right.
