MT to AT can it equal happiness?

My last 5 cars have all been MT and I am thinking of going to get a new G35 this weekend(currently driving a TSX MT), I'd like to think I am a spirited driver, but am also getting older and busier then ever before and just putting it into gear and going is not such a bad thing... but do you think it would make someone like me happy? With the TSX is was not an issue, because the car is just TOO slow in AT configuration, and with the higher revving, low torque engine, being in control was important. With the new G35 I do believe I will have enough torque across the board to make me happy, so why shift?

Have any happy MT drivers gone to an AT and been happy?

All i can say is this. i went from an AT car to a MT and then back to a AT. my next car, MT. my next car after that? MT.

The G35 might seem fun to just stick your foot to the floor and go, but where's the excitement? AT just makes everything seem so "i'm gonna floor it and just sit here and watch the car do everything for me".

My problem with AT is the lag. Maybe I just haven't driven a good auto, but every past AT car I drove,(tons of rentals as well) I hated the lag when I step on the gas. Having a lockup converter makes it worse.
I felt like you did after having a MT for a while. Then I switched to AT, & thought ok maybe it's this car, so I got another 1, then I got a MT again & am happy.

I should add I drive 20+ cars in any given day from Daewoo's to Ferrari's so its not like I am not used to both. Its just that personal cars have been MT's for a number of years and I am not sure I am ready for a switch...

My first few cars were manuals as well, but I switched to auto because of traffic.

Living in a high congestion area - like central FL - it's a lot of work trying to commute around with a manual.

I don't regret the change.

Unless you race/track the car, I don't see a reason for an MT. Sure it's more fun sometimes, but most of the time I'd prefer AT, unless there is no traffic where you live.

I went from an MT Integra to an AT TSX and it was fine for a couple of years, but all it took was one drive in an MT car again before that all changed and I immediately felt the yearning again from an MT.

I would say that if you don't plan on keeping the car for long and only use it to commute to work, an AT might be sufficient, but if you use your car on the weekends as a means of entertainment, then I would say you're better off sticking with the MT.

I've drove all MT's until recently - the only reason I drive AT is because of rush hour traffic. For me it's simply a convenience factor.

For a third car to drive on weekends - I will definitely buy a sporty MT again.

I drove an MT Integra and an MT IROC-Z before then, a total of 17 years. Traffic around LA is horrible and my wife doesn't drive a stick so the new car (my TSX) had to be an AT. I do miss the MT sometimes but, in my situation, the advantages of the AT outweigh my missing the MT.

I am focusing on property development and land leasing, I also have been saving like a fool since I was 18. By the time I am 30 I should have enough leases and deals going/completed that I can sit back and relax or work only on what I want to... now about that transmission

I have said it before, for a daily driver in a congested area..........I don't see the reason for having a manual.

A pleaure vehicle is a different story.

If you live in the middle of nowhere or moderate traffic, a manual is no big deal as a DD.

then.. while youre still working, for the next 5 years, go for the G35 in auto. its still pretty fun to floor it. it doesnt lag as much as other autos. i think the CVT tranny in the Nissan/Infinitis are awesome.

after the 5 years, when youre out of work and just chillin, most likely you'd want a fun car. since you dont got to worry about traffic and work, trade in that auto G35 and get something else later.

just in the right time when all the fun japanese cars make their comeback.. Supra, next gen Z, Nissan GTR, nsx, S2000.. well, maybe not the nsx and GTR unless youre willing to dish out 70+k.. haha

I have owned manuals most of my life till I tore my rotator cuff in my right shoulder so now I drive the TL. I had 2 G35's 6mts before this car. And really and truthfully I would have to say the G35 tranny is one of the worst ones to even get. But the car is fun. It's very notcy and they have syncro problems as well. The TSX manual will feel like a jem compared to the G35. Test drive one and you will see what I mean. The Auto G35 is just as fast as the manual per the forums.

You bring up a good point, a number of years ago I was in a bad car accident and fucked my ankle up but good and somedays it doesn't work so well. I was unable to drive my new replacement car for 4 months after the accident because I had limited use of my right foot, if things got worse or needed to be worked on(my foot) I would be in the same situation.... I am going to the dealership tomorrow so I have a little more time to think about it.

I drove for 3 years with my shoulder. And it was getting worse with pain more often. I also drove like 100 miles a day for work. So I decided to do some changes. Now I don't use it anymore to shift, and it rarely hurts me anymore. So it was a good decision for me to move away from the manual. But I still miss the fun of it.
