When was the 5 series "facelifted?" 01 or 02? I would never buy a used car, but performance wise this is a tough decision. If it's the old style, it would make the choice easier...

M5

you won't make a bad decision either way, but I'd get M5, then Look at some DINAN Mods !

Saw one down in St. Augustine, V8 on that thing sounded soooooo nice.

I would ask yourself if you really need a big car, I have driven both and performance wise they are pretty close, but the m3 corners a little better, with those choices you can't make a bad decision.

Would you rather have a bigger car, or is the handling of a 2 door more important to you?

M5. It demands more attention and gets it. You always see an M3 and personally I think they are overrated, but an M5 is classy. Not to mention the additional power and if you're looking into an M3 you should be looking at this M5. The reason people buy M3 and not M5 is because they can't afford it. Probably not, they probably just want a 2 dr car but even still.

Sorry, 8000 miles is no ride around the block.......I like the M5, but not one with that kind of mileage.

I would get a new M3 over a used M5, plus the styling is mad dated (the new 5series will be out in like four months or so).

Not sure what attention you people are talking about, if an M5 isn't in Lemans Blue or Imola Red they aren't that showy. They look like standard 5series cars with 4 tail pipes out the back, different front bumper.

Actually, I happen to think the M3 is more fun to drive than the M5. The M5 does makes a better everyday car though.

Someone on another forum had this same dilemma (new M3 or used M5).....they ended up going with the M5.

If you do decide M5, beware of the clutch problems they have.. Go to WWW.BMWM5.COM and do a search...

On a $70k High performance 6spd 394hp sedan....8k miles is too much.

How do you know how that person drove up to that point? Proper break in? Did they know how to shift? Ride the clutch? Timely oil changes? Absolutely sure there was no paint work done to the car?

As gholdin said, bank on getting a new clutch...because the stock ones suck.

I would probably say new M3 over used M5.

How old are you? The M3 is definitely a younger more agressive looking car. The M5 is hot as hell but if I was twenty something w/ an M5 i'd feel out of place (but that's just me).

8 thousand UNKNOWN miles on an M5 would be a deal breaker for me anyways. Ever see the hassle BMW guys have getting simple warranty items fixed on their ///M's? I'd hate to own an M5 post warranty, hell, an M3 at that.

even if they were both new go w/ the m3, the m5 is about to change its style

i guess i'm to paranoid of a person to buy a used car, you will NEVER know exactly what they did to it, car facts.com aint that good

EVeryone keeps saying the M5 is about to change, and IMHO i think its changing for the worse. I dont care if its a v10 and fasterand better this and that, its flat out fugly.

Id snatch up that M5, its the best looking 5series to date and its fast as hell. same posted 0-60 times as the M3 on the bimmer website. it just sleek and classy.

But its your money bro, get what think is best for you.

i'd love an M5, but spending that much money on a USED car is a little iffy. if u get an M3 u have the satisfaction of having a NEW car and breaking it in the RIGHT way.

The M5's gonna look dated real fast. The M3 will be a classic for a lot longer. And I'd be nervous about a used performance car. I'm in the minority, but unless you really want the bigger car, I'd go with the M3.

As much as i love the sound of v8 in the m5... i would have to agree with Beltfed that 8k is too much. Order a new m3.. at least this way you know bmw made a car just for YOU.

Tough choice........

If you or some one can make sure the M5 is in good condition, then it's a very good deal. However, if I would pay 53k to buy a car, that car must be new and has no more than 80 miles on it. Therefore, I still recommend you to get the M3. At least mentally I would feel happier because I am 100% sure everything is original and nothing wears out yet.

The M5! With 8K miles it is just right for a used car. Someone paid the initial depreciation out of it for you.
Edmunds lists it at $62,709 for the 2001; $68K for the 2002.

The M3 will take a big hit in depreciation the first year.

No matter which way you go, they're over priced. But some will say you get what you pay for, but I won't. You may also consider my opinion worthless as I drive an Acura CL-S and have no direct experience with any of the cars you're looking at. YMMV

It's two years old, and could quite have possibly had the crap beat out of it. At least a new M3 comes with a full warranty and you are the first person to put miles on it.

Although owning an M5 would be pimp!

i don't like the M5. I know it is a hot car but
1) Dated
2)I agree with Beltfed/ Crazy about the mileage/ clutch
3)if i am spending that kinda money i want it NEW
4)2 doors too many
5)someone mentioned about seeing too many M3's....i see 5 0r 6 M5's for every M3 over here.

Basically, i like coupes...I respect the M5 but not my cup of tea. M3 is molded around you. + like Crazy said...you get it tailored for you!!

I just wish I had that option. :P

I think I would pick the M5 too. Don't see too many of those on the road.

Damn i wish i had your tough decisions. In the end there's too many negatives with a used M5. I'd go with the M3 however I don't really see a loser in this situation.
