Lug nuts q's

I have been looking at lug nuts for my new wheels. Just don't know what kind to get. The ones I had on my Axis wheels were "tuner" lugs. They were open ended and you need a key to take all of them off. I have seen aftermarket lugs ranging from $25-$600 I also looked at acorn lugs. The wheels I have now are ASA AR1 wheels in black. I still have my old lugs as I haven't sold the Axis wheels. Is there a good reason why lugs can cost so much. I'm thinking $50-$100 is more than enough.

Any help would be great.

first of all welcome to acurazine. I live within an hour of you. I work at Anna Engine Plant(Honda) for about a year now. my line built the motor for your little Element. now in remarks to the lugs. you can do what you want and it's your money. why "upgrade" your lugs? the only way i'd upgrade is once in awhile you'll see guys have the "one center lug" (like on F1 or Indy car) but if the lug pattern leave it alone.

^Stock lugs don't always fit in the lug holes on aftermarket wheels. Also, the stock lugs may have a different seat than the aftermarket wheels take.

My main recommendation would be closed-end lugs.

As for the price, I'd bet the expensive ones are the ultra lightweight ones. Less weight on lugs = less unsprung weight = improved performance. Now, how much of an improvement will you see in an Element (or daily driving any car)? None you'll notice. The $50-100 ones will suit your needs perfectly.

My dad worked at Anna, and will be back when he is done at the Alliston plant. Do you work in die casting? If you do, ask anyone if they know Dave Campbell (Campy).
I know about the knock off single lugs for the Indy cars. I just want to know the difference between my factory lug nuts that cost only about $50-$75 compared to the Rays that can cost as much as $600 if you get the titanium ones. The only advantage they have if being very light weight.

Thanks for the info. Any good reason to get the closed-end lugs? I think with the Ray's lug nuts you are just paying for a name really. You can get lugs that weigh the same for far less, such as you said, $50-$100. I think factory lugs just make a wheel/tire package unfinished. If you can spend the money on the wheels, finish the project out and get some nice lugs too. Thanks again.

Depends on the wheels. I use the factory lugs with mine, and they look great. Would I use them for most wheels, though? No.

I like closed-end because you have less chance of getting crap in the threads. Personal preference, I suppose. Looks cleaner, too.

You also found out Rays' secret. I'm sure the quality is there, but a lot of what you spend is the name. There are a lot of other lugs with just as good quality but for less money (Gorilla comes to mind, as do some McGard's).

Water-S is an idiot. You need to make sure the seat on your lug nut matches the seat on your wheel.

Then you need to make sure that the lug nut is deep enough to engage the seat on your wheel, and not bottom out.

Then read more about Water/mongo/IWorkatHondaandPutoutFiresandDriveaTruckonmydad'sF arm(andsomeotherstuff)

He's the village idiot here.

Thank god we bought our Element over a year ago. The resale value on the 2008 production run just tanked.

Alright.......how can I tell what seat I need for the wheels? Will it be obvious from looking at them or should I call ASA and just ask them?

I had issues with my Axis wheels vibrating a little, even after I had the bent wheel fixed, could this have been a hub issue and possibly a lug seat issue also? Just trying to understand a little better......

Yes. It could have been caused by the wheel not being centered on the hub. Eitehr lugnuts, or no centering ring.

Typical lug seat styles are ball and cone (not sure if that is the right term)

Or of course, a wheel that was out of balance...

You definitely want hub-centric rings for aftermarket wheels (unless you get custom wheels that are made specifically for your hub bore). Any off-the-shelf wheels will have a large hub bore to accomodate all cars. You need rings with an OD (outer diameter) that matches your rims and an ID (inner diatmeter) that matches your hub bore.
