Lexus contracts Rod Millen to build IS430
(09:10 Aug. 19, 2003)
Lexus set to put together IS 430 muscle car this fall
By AUTOWEEK
The traditional definition of a muscle car is a smaller car given the engine of a bigger car. Well, Lexus has a smaller car, the IS 300, and it has a nice engine from a bigger car, the 4.3-liter V8. Voilà: muscle car.
Lexus has tapped Rod Millen to assemble its IS 430 muscle car, which should be completed this fall. The V8 will not be supercharged or turbocharged but will get enough massaging to put out 350 to 360 hp, with the emphasis on “street driveability.”
The power will run through a Getrag six-speed manual to a drivetrain upgraded to handle the extra power. The car also gets bigger brakes and 18-inch wheels.
Is this a production tease? We hope so. Word is the engine requires only an extra three-quarters of an inch of hood space to fit, a clearance that could easily be accommodated.

I guess there will be a V8 4-door sport sedan w/ Lexus reliability coming soon

they wouldn't tell you anyways because it will be a back door project.

there is no way this car will be cheap! this car will definitely be in the 40K range. I mean the normal IS is like 33K so with a more powerful engine and better suspension, look out, i bet like 45.

For a 40k price range, the car has to have balanced handling and retain the sure footedness of the current IS. It hasn to look different than the other IS', and with 350 horses pumping through an 8 cylinder, it should be up to the task of running with the M3, S4 and C32. It doesnt have to be faster to be a winner, but if it could hang in a straight line and in the twisties, then we have a real winner.

first of all you'd never get one for that price! second of all they never hook up the base shit model. They would do it to one with most to all options

I am all for it, though not sure of the price. The L-tuned IS was 43k already with the same engine.
Also, Rod Millen does not have the best Customer service nor the best fitting aftermarket parts for Lexus currently.
But I hope so, about time the Germans get some competition from the EastSide!

I've seen & read info on the IS430 & if it does come into production, I will be upgrading to that car. If the Supra comes back, then I will be upgrading to that. I also like the G35C & CLK500.
Any other suggestions for cars would be appreciated.

Weight weight difference is only 50lbs I think. Since the I-6 is so long, the V-8 has space, just a lil tweaking, nothing major.
Now the TTE version was the stock 300hp V-8 and the other a supercharged V-8 for 400hp.
Lexus has bore and stroked the old 4.0 to 350hp in the Lexus roadster about 6-7 years ago. I guess Rod Millen is going to go that route with the 4.3.

lover and fighter
I'd love to have the option of this product. I really wanted the IS but it was sooooooooo slow comparatively. It also had a weak aftermarket spot when I got my car and things like a bolt on turbo were entirely frowned upon by their blue-blood service department. But with the extra stock power, I'd buy this car for under $50k in a flash...

The weight of the V8 is not much heavier since Lex's 4.3 V8 is alluminum and I-6 is not (if my memory is correct)...

It has loads of torque anywhere in the rev range. The engine is as stout as they come and already has tons of support.

But actually about the same HP and most likely about the same torque. The SC'd CL-S would have an engine rating of about 360 HP and 330 lb/ft.

That is one nice thing about roots style blowers, they essentially make the engine seem like a larger displacement motor.
Pressure Ratio * Actual Displacement = Effective Displacement
6 PSI = 1.41 Pressure Ratio
1.41 * 3.2L = 4.5L

Balance, Brakes, and RWD
Good powerband on the V8 too.
