LA Auto Show, RL & TL-S info...

MotorTrend.com has pics of the TL-S and the RL from the LA Auto Show...

Here are clips:

The Acura TL sedan has been treated to over 500 improvements for the 2002 model year, including an edgier front-end appearance. Less obvious are the myriad refinements, such as aerodynamic side mirrors, improved brake feel, reduced road noise, and enhanced radio reception. Standard creature comforts have expanded to include six-disc in-dash CD changer, seat memory, auto-up driverŐs window, tilt headrests, and 0.8-g-capable cupholder. Best news is the addition of a Type-S model with 260-horsepower, sporty suspension, and minor styling differentiation.

Note the aerodynamic mirrors! Hope we can swap em. Wonder if theyll make the TL in red?

The RL looks almost unchanged... heres the link...

i have heard from my acura dealership saying that the next acura rl will be very expensive than the current one..will be something like $50000~$70000 .. cause honda is going to release a rear wheel drive and V8 engine for the new acura RL...cool..but too expensive to be expected...will compete the lexus LS 430.....cool

Does it get the perf leather??? Doesn't look like it. I've grown to HATE the perforated leather. Leather lotion gets crusted up in the holes if you're not careful when applying. Total PITA!!!

My opinion? I like it.

Its just a CL with 2 more doors.

I still prefer a coupe... dont need a people mover.

When I had my TL... I always felt like there was a cavern behind me. So I'm in a coupe phase now... maybe ill need a 4-door again soon... if I do... the new TL is sweet.

I think it is the perfect update to the TL... they kept the current TL's hood creases... while giving it the updated front end of a CL.

And the little improvements are what count... aerodynamic side mirrors, improved brake feel, reduced road noise, and enhanced radio reception... that can make the car 100% better.

Good job Acura... now get back to work.

Yeah! 4DSC baby!! And it's getting a 260 hp 3.5 V6!!

I think it would give the TL-S a good run, especially with stick...

According to the numbers, the current Maximas with the 222-hp engines and 5-speed manuals are giving the CL-S a run.

As for the new TL, it looks great! I kind of wish I had waited. I really like the lines much better than on the CL.

Unless Maxima puts in a 5-speed auto, it will be slow off the line (with auto). Hope they beef up their clutch. Still, had many good years with mine. Acura service etc is much, much, better (Nissan -- been there, done that).

Hmmmm -- I wonder if Acura's 3.5 is a bored-out 3.2 block?

I like the new TL, kind of wish they'd add a 5-speed to their TL/CL lineup.

Not that I'm complaining but the CL-S with a manual would be AWESOME!

I used to have a 95 MAx, and a 2000 Maxima SE auto before I traded it in for the CL-S, and honestly the auto does not compare in acceleration against the CL-S. Actually, I thought my 95 was faster than the 2000 off the line, but once you get up to the higher speeds the 2000 is definitely faster. But I do think the 2000 5spd Max would definitely give the CL-S is pretty good run.

My Maxima SE automatic would fly on the freeway, but it just didn't move well off the line. I was getting killed all the time by junk boxes on city streets. Once that thing was on cam, and on the freeway, it was quick. (I don't doubt you)

(I know that this isn't a Max forum), but I once beat a GS300 in a race with my 2000 Max, it was pretty close from the start, but at about 70mph, the max really started to pull away...it really does do well at higher speeds.

The Detroit auto show is happening here in a few(?) weeks and is supposed to be on display... I'll see if I can get some picts of the 'new' TL with my new digicam.

It will only hold 245 shots at the best resolution so I'll need to be judicious in choosing what I shoot (like 230 of the 'car' babes and the rest for the 'type S'... especially of the rear doors.

Are you guys ready for LIFE-SIZE pictures?

What is the difference? huh? I think all these facelift stuff are bullshit, including the stupid RL, which gains 15hp to 225hp after five years, Acura is somehow too slow in making new cars now. Too many disappointments for me, no wonder Toyota and Lexus sell way more cars than Honda and Acura do.

The Integra replacement, will debut at the Detroit auto show in a week or two. It is the RS-X which will supposedly be a prototype of the production model.

Hopefully the RS will be radically different that the current generation. That will be the real test for Acura since the Integra/RS is their bread & butter.

Here is a video of the Acura Press Conference...

The TL Type-S portion of the video starts at about 7 minutes in and ends at about 12 minutes in.

http://www.theautochannel.com/cyberc...aias/acura.asx

After seeing the video... Im not too excited. It has a big RL like grill... Mazda Millenia headlights... and some weird fogs.

Has the CL-S wheels... and some shitty looking 16" five spokes in the Premium version.

They say the mirrors are more aerodynamic... but they look just as big, bulky, and flat faced up close.

They didnt mention plusher carpet... the logo on the steering wheel is ugly... might be nicer on a black interior though.

The new Acura corporate color is "Acura Blue." I guess that they're trying to start that campaign with the new models at the shows. The new corporate color will go along with their redesigned logo. See the Motortrend article:

EricL: The RL engine is a completely different block, a C35. (NSX engine's are C32's and C30's)

Though the MDX engine is related. The head is much like the TL's and CL's, but the bottom end is STROKED and not bored. Stroking the engine increases displacement by quite a bit, but you have more inertia to overcome when the piston has to reverse direction, hence the inherently lower redline, but torqier powerband; perfect for an SUV. Go figure.

Soopa, why so Negative? Also point out that it gets all the nice features of the S, and a few more. 6 disc in dash, memory seats, backup assist mirror, at least Acura has addressed the loud outside mirrors issue as opposed to ignoring it... can't complain there. If the results are lower wind noise at speed, who's to complain? M3 mirrors have about half the real-estate that our mirrors do in reflective area. Yikes. I sat in a friends accord with M3 mirrors, wow, I am thankful for the 27something degrees visibility I have in the TL.

Also many ppl fail to mention that the very much coveted Inspire Tail lights are now standard on the Type S. Ppl have paid up to $600 for those tail lights, and now their standard. And on the TL board, you know they get nothing but hands down praise. You witnessed that firsthand. If the history went back that far, I'd quote you drooling over them like the rest of us have.

I may not speak for everyone, but the TL's tail with inspire's destroy's the CL's tail. Til now, that 260 hp engine was the appeal that made me overlook the somewhat controversial rounded end of the coupe, but now I put all debate to a rest: TL Type S.

Simply my opinion, but I thought some ppl share the same thoughts.

Didnt mean to sound negative... just un-excited.

I thought they would add more to it like they did witht he CL over the TL.

All it is, is a CL with 2 more doors.

Even has all the same features. The only thing more the TL has is, an Acura logo on the steering wheel, auto-up window, better mirrors.

Either way... its nice... just less then what I expected.

I dont like the headlights... they look like a direct copy of the new Millenias. But apart from that... I like it all... Im glad they kept the back end of the current TL... I always thought that was its best side.

And I am glad they addressed the mirror issue... but I am skeptical... they barely look different.

But... overall... good improvement... its a nearly perfect car. Just dont know why they would copy Mazda design in the headlights?!?!

Soop's pic of the TL-S initially reminded me
just for a *split second* of the Mercedes S500 series..just a tad I mean cuz the pic looks like its a wide phat corporate sedan

Dunno but the eyez aren't as impressive as the ones on the CL...which are incredibly sexy to me

I found the perfect solution to this problem. When you are using the lotion, just make sure you have a toothpick handy. When it gets stuck in the leather, just use teh toothpick and pick it out. Works fine for me!

Thanks for the info. I know about piston speeds and stroking. Good for torque, but makes for high piston speeds. I was curious about the possibility of the 3.5 liter being a bored-out 3.2, but you've answered that question.

Hmmmm, the BMW M3 is now running with F1 piston speeds (hope it lasts), so I wonder if the 3.5 could actually be reworked for good top end *or* is it too undersquare at this point..

Oh, well... I'll be dreaming/inventing/etc.

Actually to be more thorough EricL the J30A1 (Accord V6) engine is the oldest form of the engine we see, if you bore that out you'll get a J32, or a CL/TL engine. Stroke that and you'll get a J35, an MDX engine.

Of course its quite a bit more complicated than that, but the displacement will be right.
