LA Auto Show 2021
Decided to drop by the LA Auto Show this morning. Got there early and beat the crowds. I was mainly interested in all the new and upcoming EV offerings so I spent very little time on ICE cars. One big surprise is that BMW, Audi, Mini, Marc, Cadillac, and Acura were all no shows. And with BMW, Marc and Audi all coming out with new EVs that was disappointing.
For ICE, I checked out the Hyundai Kona N and Elantra N. The new Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV, and the Grand Wagoneer...and since it wasn't busy I did the test drive event for the Grand Wagoneer and man does it impress to the nines. And it better for its price tag. No expense was spared on that vehicle. I believe the one I drove was a series III. I also checked out the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the RAM TRX, and the new Bronco. And I had to show Alfa some love with their 2 new colors: Ocra GT and Verde Montreal, gorgeous. What was interesting at this years set up was because of the no shows there was more space in the halls and they had some of the ride and drive event INSIDE the convention center. RAM had a whole obstacle course you drive inside. Ford had one of the Mach-E, and then EVGo had one with a bunch of different plug ins. Of course no Tesla, Rivian or Lucid.
As far as EVs go. The Kia EV6 seems decent. Both it and the Hyundai feel a bit cheap inside, but probably good daily drivers. The Fiskar Ocean looks nice though you couldn't really get in it. The Subaru was OK but the back seat was tiny. The Toyota was probably a Toyota but again you couldn't get in it. The Nissan is a small SUV. There were many new So Cal start up players: Mullen, Indi, etc...who knows how far these companies will actually get or if they will even survive long enough to deliver. But they were interesting to see.
I'll be honest. There is still no one to truly compete with Tesla for an overall package. Charging Network, Battery Tech, Storage space (sub trunk and frunk) and most importantly supply line. That said, since we already have the Y for hauling and trips, many of these such as the Kia would be a decent option for a 2nd car that would be more of a commuter/errand vehicle. There was the Ford Lighting but its massive unless you really need or love trucks. I'm waiting for Stellantis to get prototypes out to the world for Dodge, Ram, and Alfa.
Anyway, enjoy.

Fantastic pictures, thanks for sharing. When I lived in LA I used to go to the LA Auto Show every year; it's definitely one of the things I miss the most about living down there (the others being the weather and the Mexican food).

Its definitely unique lol. I actually preferred sitting in the Kona. If I were to get another ICE car I’d probably put it on the list even though I wince at the thought of fwd.

Awesome Sarlacc! Thanks for sharing! Shame on the German bigs for not showing up. EVs have come a looong way! I can here Elon saying, "you're welcome" to all of the EV car manufacturers. Too bad Fisker didn't show up in a bigger way. They could use the marketing.

Fiskar had an event earlier in the week where they officially unveiled the car at Santa Monica pier. Sadly it doesnt seem to be widely reported.
