Then take this little test:

I got nineteen out of nineteen by just looking at the pics. I've owned some of them and worked on others however.

I think you guys are doing pretty good, as the engines are definitely from a bygone era. A little way of cheating is familiarizing yourself with the engine colours used during that decade. Valve cover design is also a way of determining an engine.
That '58 Mercury Marauder engine? Here's a little trivia: the first American V8 to ever be produced and offered to the public that broke the 400 hp mark.

FWIW, a friend of a friend of a friend bought one of these

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_GAA_engine
It was Ford's first DOHC, 4 valve per cylinder, and gear driven camshafts V8 with 1100 cuin. The guy who bought it owns a towing company and saw it come up at a local US surplus auction in MD. One of Jay Leno's buyers was there but he was at the wrong place at the wrong time so the towing company guy got it.
My friend heard it start up (they are using some other carb's than what came with it), it sounded pretty awesome he said. The owner is not sure what to do with it, it's too nice and rare to put into tractor sled racing. Too heavy for a dirt track car and also not legal. Last I heard he was going to restore it when he got around to it, but it was already in pretty good condition when he bought it.

I struggled with the AMC, Studabaker ones.
Its funny how you mentioned engine color as cheating. As soon as i saw an engine that was Gold I started looking for the Oldsmobile answer. I use to get so sick when when we had to swap an Olds 350 engines into the old GM 6.2L Diesel trucks when they blew up. It was one of the easier straight across swaps you could do with little mods but still enough aggravation to ruin your week.

Not bad for someone who grew up around Japanese cars and has never worked on anything with a carburetor before. I did recognize several of the more distinct designs from my hidden desire to own some old-school Detroit iron.

I wished I grew up in that era.
