J.D. Power: Styling biggest reason people reject Acura

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/22/j...-reject-acura/

I'm shocked!!!! lol

It's no secret that the corporate schnoz adopted in recent years by Acura is, shall we say... controversial. But whether or not it's helping or hurting sales is up for debate. On one hand, the brand's 24-percent increase in sales in 2010 over the previous year has Honda's luxury division outpacing the gains of its rivals. On the other hand, nearly everyone's 2009 sales figures went down the economic toilet, and J.D. Power reports that exterior styling is the number one reason new car shoppers are rejecting the marque, followed closely by Acura's interior styling.

Perhaps tellingly, Acura's two most successful models in sales gains are the MDX and RDX utility vehicles, models competing in burgeoning segments (and the former of which features a somewhat muted faces compared to the rest of the company's lineup). But hope may be on the way, and soon. According to Automotive News, Dave Conant, who owns an Acura store in Mission Viejo, California and has gotten an early look at the next-gen TL, Acura's middle child is getting a major nose job.

And more new models are reportedly on the horizon as well, including hybrids and a likely return to the entry-level compact luxury class. What's more, the automaker has promised dealers that future models will be better differentiated from one another, both styling-wise and in size. All that sounds good, just so long as no giant polished cow-catcher grilles get in the way.

:duh:

I'd be tempted to get a TL if it looked more like the 3G on the outside.

As for the criticism of Acura's interior styling.. I think it looks quite nice.

I'm shocked about the interior. I would say it's arguably best in class.

As for the TL the interior is nice but the outside kills me. I've tried to let it grow on me like the 8th Gen Accord but it's not happening. I like the 8th gen Accord coupe now but still hate the sedan just like the TL.

Hopefully some people will be fired at Acura. The "feminine" approach in design doesn't work.

Wait a minute!!!!!

You mean people don't like the beak and the massive amount of interior buttons?!?!?!!?

You gotta be kidding me....this cannot be true!!!!!

Let's hope Honda/Acura gets the message and starts over with a CLEAN SLATE on interior/exterior designs....and power train options.

So the "haters" were right after all....eh?

I agree fewer buttons would be nice. More knobs please. I shouldn't have to tap a button a dozen times to change the temperature or use voice recognition. A simple temperature knob does it in under a second.

Duh!!! it took this long for JD to write something about Acura's styling? they must be just as retarded as those engineers at Acura. interior wise, it may not have the most luxurious feel, texture or quality fit and fitment, but i gotta say it's tops in class.

Surprised me too. I love the 3G Tl interior and have driven as an extended loaner (~3 days) a 4G TL and liked it's interior just as much, if not more.

The interior, IMO, has always been good to very good. But the button hell has to go. They should study Audi interiors and take a cue from them.

Now the beak change, long over due. Much to the chagrin of the 4G crowd. I think if it resembles the JDM Legend in a sharper way it will look a lot better.

I think the major problem with the 4G TL styling is that it doesn't look like a natural progression from the 3G.

They'll do studies on some of the most obvious shit

I think the interior complaints was more as far as design goes, not functionality. I think the reason that the TL's interior got low marks as well is because all of those buttons can seem pretty intimidating at first glance.

about the exterior styling, it could also be from the outdated technology such as the 5 speed transmissions. "Acura...not so advance".

I was a bit surprised about the dislike of the interior styling, I think it is alright and very well built (especially compared to my 01 CL-S).

the future has high potential...

I am a strict acura fan but I agree with a lot of people when they say that the new design in their line up is well just ugly. I was rather excited when I came across this article..

"It's no secret that the corporate schnoz adopted in recent years by Acura is, shall we say... controversial. But whether or not it's helping or hurting sales is up for debate. I didn't know there was another thread, oh well. But I'm shocked by their interior comment because acura does put out some of the best interior designs and their materials are higer quality then competitors like infiniti.

That winter commercial made me see just how ugly the Acura is. It's horrible. Like someone took the feeling of being kicked in the balls and turned it into cars.

This is the original source.

It's an intersting read, everything I already knew about the current Acura's. The design of the TL sucks in comparison to the 3g. IMO the smaller grill like they put on the tsx and rl will not look good either but we may just have to sit tight and see if they will go for performance in the new tl and rl. As far as being in the small car market they should bring back the cl. BUT, this goes back to another problem, they have too many cars that overlap eachother.

That's funny that GM had picked her up. Now that she's gone, maybe we'll get some designs that'll turn heads again.

what's scary about that article is that she won an internal contest within Acura with her design. Acura liked her work, which to me looked like she just took great liberty with BMW's 6-Series (concept-wise), Pontiac G6's front lower air dams and threw in some Acura-ness.
