Take a closer look and you'll see why many [including myself] went with Acura. They do look nice from afar.

Driven an s60R. Nice interior, nice ext. Decent drive....no power til boost. then power just goes away at 5k until shift.
Manual tranny, if you can find one, has a stupid CDV. I know with bimmer there is a mod to get rid of that dumb feature. Not sure about volvo, but I bet there is. CDV (clutch delay valve) is super annoying and takes all the feel/fun out of driving a stick.
Changing the suspension on the fly was cool, but otherwise useless.
Nice car...I'd spend my money on an Audi instead.

Look at that rear wheel. That camber needs some adjustment. Unless (not that informed when it comes to racing) it's good to have it like this? Nice, I like it. But rear could of used a bit wide body look.

And o2cls, those 3 pics you posted up, are from the company called Evolve. They dont have anything going for the S40, very limited parts, not to mention everything from them costs an arm and a leg. S40 and S60 are good cars none the less, but if you want sporty and speed around, u may want to look elsewhere...

Remember ... Ford has meddled with Volvo. So it's gone quite Euro-sexy with their design but it also means their reliability has gone down (at least, with my parents' experience). Their '89 Volvo 740GL was a rock. Their current 2000 S70 ... so-so.
I do like the direction they are headed with design but they need to improve on electronics reliability. Volvos have made turbos for ages, so I'm pretty sure they are proven. Most you can just upgrade the chip to add more boost "safely".
Evolve does some nice things with their bodykits. Just the stupid bolt pattern for Volvos don't give you many options for rims. (Well, for the S70 ... don't know about the S40/S60, etc...)

evolve does engine managment programs under 1000 that add 30+ horsepower!

I test drove an S60 about 2 years ago. It was decent and very comfortable from what I remember. Just didn't feel that sporty. Although, an S60R may be different, but I've never driven one. Their reliability scared me off. I constantly see headlights and tailights out on ones on the street, and heard they have many electrical problems that will drive you crazy. Decent car though.
I also test drove one of the older design S40's. Not impressive at all. Hopefully the new design is vastly improved. Haven't seen many new ones on the road.
One thing that sucks about Volvo is that hardly anything comes standard. Start adding options, and the price skyrockets. Not cool.

ive driven the s40 t5. i liked those t-tech seats they had. but the turbo lag was very noticeable and suspension on the soft side. rear leg room is as bad as the new IS. didnt like the center "floating" stack.

from what I've read in my Car and Driver magazines. almost all the editors bitch about the car feeling "dead" before the turbo spools. usually they say around 4500 or 5000. So if you want a flat "power band" don't look at this car.
the S60R is basically a rich guy's WRX Sti.
I don't know if you like Subaru but I'd either look at the Legacy GT or WRX Sti. for the amount you save on a WRX Sti vs a S60R you can put a stage 3 Xcceleration.com kit with labor on it. which consist of a chip,fuel/boost module, boost controller, ram air intake, headers and uppipe, Blowoff valve, cat back exhaust, and a top mount intercooler.

Love Volvos. Hate the prices.
If they weren't so expensive I'd definately consider one.
I actually had a S40 as a rental once. I think it is a 5 cylinder (if I'm remembering correctly).
It had nice pick up and the suspension felt pretty stable. I took my wife to the dealership when I got back and that little car is ~$40K if my memory serves me correctly.
For that kind of coin I want my other cylinder at least.

Drifting
previous owner of the 850 turbo and current co-owner of the XC70. love volvos. the 850 is rock solid - 140+K miles and still doing great (parents drive it). the XC70 is a couple of notches lower in reliability but the engine is good and the interior is comfy.
i'd recommend a volvo to anyone but i agree with knight rider, they are a bit pricey for their segment
