Dude, you need to do a little research next time. The 2002 was quite a car back in it's day. Kind of like a precursor to the E30 M3.

My first car was a 1972 2002tii that I restored. It was a hell of a car. 2 liter engine with 145hp and a 4 Speed ttrany. Doesn't sound like much until you consider it only weighted like 1700 pounds. That and my S2000 are the best cars I have ever owned.

I dunno - it's kinda like my being born in 74 and knowing that the 68 Shelby 428 Cobra was a monster for its time, or that the 67 Corvette Stingray convertible is the most beautiful, awesome muscle car ever made?

Might have something to do with that.

Yeah, you don't have to be old to like these cars (I am only 29) but when It was time to find a car when I was 16, I refused to get the standard Sunbird/Firebird crap that everyone else had so I did some research and found out about the old 2002's and bought one.

They are somewhat uncommon now days (they rust like crazy) so it isn't suprising that many people haven't heard of them.

I had the poor mans's version , a 92' SE-R

I always admired the 2002's though. The Tii's especially!

It was the grand daddy of the "Sports Sedan" concept.

that explains it, I thought i would inhert my dad's lexus when i was learning how to drive at 16, then when i got my license at 17, they got me a new bmw. No thinking required

the only dumb thing is that instead remaking the 2002 BMW is releasing the Mini. a car which has 0 to do with their heritage. and it would be a great marketing thing to have a 2002 BMW 2002..

The Mini will make tons of money, and it does have heritage (not connected to BMW though). I have come to the conclusion that BMW could care less about their image now. It's sad really, but have you seen the new 7 series? :

I love the updated styling of the 3-series though, espcially the 330i Sport Package. That car has one of the mopst beautiful sets of wheels ever. No wif only they would make them 18"

History is my second car passion after mechanicals. the 2002 set the standard for every sports sedan that followed, it was the original pocket rocket and the ancestor to some great cars.

Yeah, if it wasn't for the 2002, BMW wouldn't have started the whole market that our cars are in today. The 2002 was an awesome car, and put BMW on the map in the small, affordable sports car niche.

Might have something to do with that.

I disagree. The 2002 was a great car but not as well known or desirable as the Cobra or the 67 Stingray. Check the resale prices to confirm this. I can't think of a comparable car but maybe the Sunbeam Tiger (probably too obscure) or maybe the 240Z - I think that is a better comparison.

A Sunfire what? hehe.

BTW, ebaymotors.com has a BMW 2002 for sale, going for an amazing $2,000 right now. Has some rust but they say it has a new interior.

Competition for the 2002 was the Datsun 510 and Alfa GTZ. A few car magazines right now have articles on the BRE 510 and they mention the 2002.

The president of my BMWCCA chapter has a 2002, and it's a load of fun. Last September at a track in New Mexico, his throttle linkage broke and he was at WOT for 1/3 of the way around the track until he could get it shut off...makes a good case for engine kill switches

60's muscle cars ownz j00

I don't necessarily disagree with you on that - however, his point was that since the car was older than his age, how was he expected to know about it.

Granted, he atoned for his sins, but I think that was his original point.

I'll still take a 67 'ray convertible over any car - except maybe the cobra.
