took a pic of my friends 535i, is this illegal?

he cut around the cali licence plate and i have to admit, it looks cool...

i wanna do this to my tsx if it's not illegal...

Doubt that's legal. I don't think you can alter it in any way.

I'd probably say it is because it doesn't have the state name and registration/inspection sticker on the plate. I'd just say take off the whole plate, either way it's illegal so whynot go the cleaner route? i do have to say though that that is very creative and it would be interesting to see what a cop says if your friend got pulled over.

VEHICLE CODE SECTION 4850-4853

4851. Every license plate shall have displayed upon it the
registration number assigned to the vehicle for which it is issued,
together with the word "California" or the abbreviation "Cal." and
the year number for which it is issued or a suitable device issued by
the department for validation purposes, which device shall contain
the year number for which issued.



4852. (a) License plates issued for motor vehicles, other than
motorcycles, shall be rectangular in shape, 12 inches in length and
six inches in width. The number and letter characters on the plates
shall have a minimum height of two and three-quarter inches, a
minimum width of one and one-quarter inches, and a minimum spacing
between characters of five-sixteenths of an inch.

It's illegal in all 50 states to modify, obscure, or deface a state license plate. Now enforcement is a different area. Some care, some don't.
