I want an '84 Renault

Really. I do. Do any of you older guys recall reading about these things? I always thought, and still do actually, that these little things were cool as hell.

Looks like a goat, but that would explain a lot.

The R5 is quick and light on it's feet. Goat in lumbering and methodically slow.

Is the Renault easy to maintain? If not, it's probably just as stubborn as a goat.

I've always thought those were really cool cars. I had no idea that any were imported into N. America. $40,000 though, a little much.

Very nice, but like Super said, 40k is a large tag.

Probably not. I would imagine it's a little more useful however.

You can get 2 S2K's for that price and have change left over, or get an NSX!

Used of course, but still.

LOL, true. What sparked the interest in it though? To have something different and unconventional? I dunno if I'd ever want to pay 40K for it though, as I mentioned earlier, there are so many other cars you can get for 40K. I'd probably buy a used lotus elise/exige If I could for that much.

Oh, I'm not interesting in purchasing it. Transport Canada would have a collective aneurism. I just recall seeming them in the early eighties and thought they were very interesting. Mid-engine/turbocharged/intercooled and purposely built. And so homely they actually appeared attractive in some warped sort of way.

The weird factor makes the car... when I saw the mid engine placement, I thought it was fantastic... That ad doesn't have an engine picture, and the ad I saw recently did...

Random R5 engine pic:

As op mentioned, much "older" folks can recall either reading about the R5 or seeing it on mags back in the day...hella quick cars for what they are/were...as for owning one tho..uhm...i would pass, but would consider an sr20det powered early 70's datsun 240z...LOL

That one looks a wee bit modified. Guessing though.

These cars are badass. I have never seen one in person, just in rally photos and videos.

Pretty tight car. I would want to own one of these if I had the money for a car collection.

Ya know it sure does look that way, but I'm pretty sure that's how the Turbo 2's look....even with that intercooler/intake manifold setup and the turbo positioning.

AEM filter is aftermarket of course.

Pretty unforgiving handling by the way, definitely a car with teeth.

Cheers,
-Mirror

I lived in Europe at the time those were roaming the roads regularly. They were unreliable crap then, and I don't think time has improved its image.

They are cool, but like Fiat convertibles and X1/9s, I just wouldn't want to be responsible for maintenance and repairs!

If you want a rare, cool, turbo car, try to get a Lotus Omega.

See post #23 & #24 FTW.
Nice to look at and dream about. Pain in the ass to own or drive.
Why do you think they exited this market more than once?
I remember a lot of ideas they tried out here. None seemed to work out for long.

Check out an Opel GT or Trimuph (?) Stag or better yet, an Avanti or Bricklin.

My father had a 1983 Renault Alliance. It was the biggest piece of shit ever. It always had a problem and required starting fluid every damn time. It was a 4spd manual and I learned to drive on that when I was 15.
