I need a tow vehicle . . .

. . . to tow my Viper (all told on it's trailer about 5500 lbs) across country a couple of times a year for various track events. I have been thinking about the new Tundra as they have great deals going on now. I looked at this thread and it seems like a lot of y'all like it. With that said, has anyone had any real-world experience with it? What else should I be looking at under $40k, used preferred?

i have personally expereinced the towing ability of the new Tundra.

My friend leased 1 and towed his s14 + tools and tires to bottonwillow. it was very easy. he borrowed a 05 F150 V8 before to tow the same car.. it was struggling, especially uphill.

and the Stopping and acceleration power is amazing for a truck.

dad has an 03 tundra with exhaust and some other goodies. and it will pull a house down. we've down some big ass boats with it and some good size trailers with 4-5 bikes on it and it does not struggle. the newer tundra with the bigger motor, frame ect will definitely do it no problem. i say go for it.

tundra all the way. the new V8's are pure power and the tranny's are smooth as silk accordingly to reports and comments from a co-worker.

I say go for it.I bought 6 new Tundras and a Ram 3500 as work/promote vehicles for my business.I drive them every now and then.Absolute work horse and looks great IMO.This could also be an everyday driver since the ride is smooth on roads and highways.A bit too large for my liking, but it does have the performance to match it's macho looks!

I really like the Tundras and know several people who own them and speak highly of its capabilities. Personally, I'd get a Ford/Chevy/Dodge Diesel just because those trucks are bad ass.

Previous owner towed a big ass camper with my 1996 1500 for close to 80K

Used 2500HD Duramax with a 6 speed Allison should fit that price range (previous truck owner got one loaded new in 06 with everything minus GPS for 42K)

if it's strictly for towing...i'd be looking for a cummins powered ram...there are plenty floating around with low (for a diesel) mileage.

Same truck my boyfriend has with a few ad-ons like a chip, intake and exhaust, and it pulls like you wouldn't believe. You don't even know you have a trailer on. My dad got an 07 F250 Super Duty, and it looks pretty, but drives like poo and already has had some issues with 1000+k on it

+2

I used my step-dad's 2500 (non-HD/allison) to pull my CL-S 400+ miles home after the tranny failed in the middle of ND.

Other than steep hills, you wouldn't have known there was anything back there, and it got 14 mpg @ 65 mph with the trailer empty, and 13 mpg @ 65 mph lugging the trailer w/ the Acura on it... Not too shabby if you ask me.

For the 40K range, IMO it just makes more sense to get a 3/4 ton diesel rig loaded up, especially for towing.

For the price range puck up a used Duramax. It will kill the tundra in every arena. Plus its a better truck. The dash layout on the new tundra is :yuk: and a reach

Hard for a Texan not to buy a Toyota truck -- you're supporting local work!

However ... if you are towing a Viper ... get a Dodge diesel or even the GM 3500 ... both are time tested to haul stuff.

I was reading the fine print on TV that and it looked like it doesnt apply to the diesels.

Driving across country = a diesel is the only way to go. Dodge or GM.

GM diesel all the way, it'll pull a house down and if you chip it, it will pull the neighbors too.
