damn dude that sucks. This is one of my dream cars as well, and when the day comes for me to buy one, I hope it doesnt crap out on me.

Hopefully BMWNA will take care of you. If not contact that lemon lawyer. Only problem is, proving the steering lock. If for some reason you have the car again and it happens again pull out your phone and take a video of that.

Sorry about your problems but the groaning in the rear end is normal when making tight turns. Listen to it in a parking garage with the window down,it's really load with the echo. My M3 did it and so did the M5 and M6 at the M school. It's the LSD I believe.

I say get rid of the car, get a Legacy GT (6MT), and throw nice snows on it. Then, the remainder that is left ($40K) can be saved up for a better car in the future.

Glad you are OK, Dave, this could have had tragic complications.

It appears you got a lemon. All car manufacturers make occasional lemons and this shouldn't put you off BMW. I say put this one behind you, get another M3, and be done with it.

Of course, if they actually find the problem and fix it, that would be nice as well.

That's a truly unfortunate account with an otherwise terrific car. It really does sound like you purchased one bad apple out of a great bunch. Hopefully the BMW techs can locate the problem and correct it in short order.

As for the C63 an IS-F rhetoric, ignore it. You still picked the best car in this class.....that is until we see an Infiniti G56

^lol thanks, ill have to check out that G56

UPDATE:

But the service dept. called me back today, they said can't find anything with the steering as of yet and that all the lights are currently off, and they make it seem like they never was on and all they said is that they are going to do is install a new navi screen.

So ill just call back BMWNA and see what they have to say.

How does lemon law work? Isnt it if the car is in the shop for the same problem for more than 3 visits and can't be fixed then it qualifies?

Yet what if the dealer doesn't even find a problem on any of those visits? Don't they have to find the problem to be given a chance to fix it?

Doesn't sound like a lemon law case to me; yet.

Lemon law varies by state so check your locale state to see how it applies to you.

I think you just got a bum car, every make has them, no one car company is free of that. I'm sure there are some bad Ferraris and Lambos out there.

Sucks you had this misfortune, whatever you get I'm sure you'll have better luck. I've had 3 BMWs now and never had major or multiple issues with any of them. So far the 2011 I have has been running great!

Good luck I hope you get it resolved quickly.

With the steering locking up like that that is a MAJOR liability. I would refuse the car and start making more phone calls.

Good luck with everything.

I highly doubt you will get your money back. Perhaps your down payment, but they will claim that you have been using the car for 6 months, so they are entitled to the money you gave them while you used it during that time.

I would refuse the car on the grounds that it is inherently dangerous to drive and a risk on your life you are unwilling to take.

Hey its your hard earned money... let them sort it out... I am certain they don't want to loose a customer and get bad press during these globally hard economic times...

I sure hate that you are having to deal with this after all you went thru to get behind that wheel... praying you're treated fairly and you're happy very soon!!!

more then likely would still deploy, but might be on the "full force" stage though, there is a reason for going to multiple staged airbags

but yes, kinda like the door for me, car is not "safe" anymore (and they put on a OEM subaru door too, not an aftermarket bullshit one either [and the body shop got an OEM fender too])

understandable, but not a "luxary" car though, and i think that is kinda what the OP wants

then manufactures would be like we never found anything on any of the visits, then there NEVER be lemon cars

but as stated before need to check the specifics of each states law

Dave, this happened on 3 instances to my friend's M6. It was an electrical problem, once it happened while he was on the freeway going about 65, steering just locked, he ended up drifting sideways. BMW sent some special technician from the Mainland to work on the M6, took like 2-3 weeks (at least he had a 550 loaner), said it was all good. Then, driving down a high rise parking structure, M6 froze again, all the electronics went off, car plowed into a median. Fortunately, he had a 24 month lease but IIRC they lemoned the car and reimbursed him although I'm unsure how much. Anyhoo, he has a new X5 and is much happier (for the time being at least).

But it sounds like your friends dealer admitted there was a problem from the 1st occurrence?

Dealer is the issue here i thinks. He needs to get aggressive with BMWNA or with a lawyer.

and file a complaint, with the locking up steering

edit: looking at some of the complaints, they are utter bullshit lol, but might be worth a shot though

Oh yeah, the car wouldn't start after the 1st incidence, all the electronics were in the dark. Each instance required towing of the M6 to the dealer. After the parking garage incident, my boy was over it and coerced them to take the car back.

My uncle had his new (300 miles on it) X3 just shut off at an intersection. No power whatsoever. So he took my rented Chrysler minivan to get the kids home.

All I heard from his wife was , "I'll never buy a f@#$%^& BMW again".

My guess would be a weird electrical problem.

Italians are worse than germans when it comes to reliability. Germans cars shut down due to electrical power. Italians catch on fire lol. (the supercars at least.)

OP, I hope everything works out for you in the end. Its pretty scary to think about these electrical problems, especially what happened to surfer rick's friend.

It looks like ill be on the run around for a while =(

the CS rep called me back today saying that she just contacted the dealership and she's awaiting their diagnosis, since they told me they can't find anything wrong with it ,i'm guessing they would tell her them same thing. She also said if the dealer says their isn't anything wrong with the car then they can't do anything to take me out of the car , so i asked her what if i get in a accident ?, she just avoided the question and said she's going to wait to see what the dealer says.

This is BS, i would think they would take this more serious, what should i do now??

Its going to be a dog and pony show.

BMWUSA wont want to admit fault, and neither will the dealer. And if the dealer can't replicate the problem they won't do anything. You're basically going to have to stick to your guns.

Your situation is unique and complicated because the dealer can't duplicate the malfunction. I'm strongly suspicious it's an electrical/electronic issue and the next time it happens, it may be too late my friend. Take care and exercise precaution, you do not want to be like my boy sliding in a 500 hp car sideways across 3 lanes of traffic. He was fortunate to have the event having mid-morning on a weekday in town when traffic was relatively lighter.

I feel for ya man, definitely sucks.

My brother just got a 335i and it's been in the shop 2 or 3 times already. As much as I love the 3 series and M3, there's really no way in hell I would buy one.

If you do get your money back, you're out of your mind if you buy another M3. Get an IS-F

Im not even going to let it come to that, i'm just not going to take the car back and tomorrow i'm going to be on the phone all day until i get this sorted out,

The dealership called this morning at 9:30 saying they checked the car out, so that means only for about 2 and a half hrs since they opened , they cant rule out the problem right away, and i don't get how they can say the ABS , Airbags, brake and suspension lights all magically disappeared.
