How do you drive 80k miles in one year?
Reason I ask is because I was car shopping all weekend and came across a 2004 Maxima SE, mint mint mint condition, not a scratch, stain or anything. Engine was spotless. But, the odometer read 82xxx miles
How can you drive that much in one year? I never seen anything like that before. Also, the price of the car was 12k, so before we saw the mileage, we were actually considering it. Is that a safe car to buy? I mean, its obviously all highway mileage, but thats alot of driving put on in a year. What do you guys think?

Someone has a long commute, or they were possibly a traveling salesman.
I'd say if it looks clean and well taken care of, snap it up. Like you said, it's probably all highway miles, so in this case I'd say the high mileage is kind of a discount.

Obviously, but dam, I never seen such a new car with that many miles. KBB value is about 20k. Only thing the car does not have is leather and nav, but it has everything else. I may go check it out again and take it for a spin.
Sauceman has alot of kilometers on his 2004 TSX (185,000km)...

I'd be less concerned with the mileage if there was documentation to back up maintainance (like oil changes)

Nissans will last a long, long time if it was maintained properly.

x2 my parents still cruz around in their '95 maxima with 220k miles
Did you check when the car was first purchased? Since it's 2004 model, that means it could been bought in mid 2003 or even early 2003 making it two years old car. If that's the case, driving 40,000 miles/year isn't toooo rare.

This is more likely the scenario.
I put 40K a year on my car because I travel for work.
Good thing I got a civic beater for work.
My friend's father works for a wall-street based business as a delivery driver, delivering IPOs and important business documents to companies all over the East Coast. The guy's from Brooklyn and he knows the back streets of like Hartford and Boston, seriously. He has an '04 Sienna with over 125k miles already. He said he had an '02 Sienna before this one and he got rid of it for the new one with over 210k miles on it. He averages like 9 hours of highway driving every single day. There's your answer... people like that put miles on fairly easily.
If the Max's price is $12K that's a hell of a deal even with the high mileage. Hell there's a '04 Maxima that has 97K miles on AutoTrader selling for $17,9K.

x 2
my uncle's shop had a customer with a 2 year old camaro that had over 200k miles on it. he commuted from sf to la a few times a week.
iirc, pennzoil bought some guy's chevy pickup truck with over a million miles on it. the guy delivers papers and his route is 1k miles per day. he gets the oil changed every three days.
some people love to drive.

....and if you were to drive low miles over the next couple years, it could balance out and you'd be able to sell the car without a big loss..For instance, you'd have a car with 100k miles in 3 yrs, and the car would be 4 yrs old, not as bad..

dude 12k for an 04 maxima?!?!?! that soudns like a great deal...check out the records and have a mechanic look at it
what that guy said about driving less miles over the next few years is true....in 2 years if you drove only 20 thuosand miles it will still be worth around the same price

My father got 230,000 K's on his Gran Prix and its a 2003....he travels alot and he says its very easy to put that much on a car....when we had our Intrepid (bight new in 97, got rid of it when we bought the GTP, 2002) we got rid of it with 550,000 K's on it and it was a 97, its very easy to rack up the mileage....

i agree its a hell of a deal. i think a 2005 base se max new could be had for around 22/23k (its basically the same as the 04). If he doesn't have leather/nav but "has everything else", I'm guessing its not the driver preffered package (which new could be had for around 26/27k). So lets say the value of the car brand new would be 24k.
You'd essentially be paying half price for a one year old car. If it was well maintained, I would probably go for it. Well first try dealing it down to 10k (by subtracting off soon to be had service costs).
In comparison, whats a 6 year old max with 80k miles go for? if its anywhere close, then you're getting the technology of the new car for a little more.

It's definitely possible.
In about 20 months, my Honda Civic went form 66,000 miles to 120,000 miles. I had a 125 mile round trip commute from Orange County, CA to Northridge. If the car was bought in 03, then it's easily possible to put on that many miles.
