Houston we have a problem...

I'd ask this in the RL forum but I'm usually the one that does the answering..

I was screwing around with my instrument cluster (changing LED bulbs) and after putting everything back together - my left turn signal turns on and stays solid as long as the battery is connected..

Now if I put the turn signal stalk to the 'right' position, all four flash. NOTHING happens when I go left...

My guess is I blew a fuse. Any other possibilities?

All connections are good, i didn't screw anything up on the instrument cluster at all.

I'll check the fuses in the morning, but after screwing around with my RL for over two hours I'm done, moving on to dinner and a beer. AKA I'm lazy.

Thank god I have another car in the stable.

/end embarrassed rant

Try the hazard light switch- maybe a bad signal bulb (although usually that slows the blink rate)?

Tried that. Hazards don't work...

I still say fuse. We'll find out in the morning.

When you changed your LED bulbs behind the dash, were they factory replacements? Some automotive electrical systems, primarily accessory systems such as dash lights/blinkers, use resistance to operate correctly. In fact, some relays used for such things as flashers/signals depend on the resistance created by the electrical system to create the correct amount of heat in order for the relay to operate correctly. If you have the old bulbs still available, put them back in and see if you still have the same problem.

Is it just the turn signal indicator that is on or the directional light itself, or both?

Parking lamp/Turn signal

This also applies to the turn signal indicators on the instrument panel

They're replacement LED's, but same voltage. I've used them before without any problems. I rechecked the instrument cluster, all the screws are in and the voltage is as it should be

Odd problem. You'd think if something is grounding or shorting out a fuse would have blown, but it seems not to be the case. It still sounds to me as if a there may be a resistance problem. A number of years ago I had a similar problem on a 540, and the dealership eventually traced it back to an electrical resistance problem.

Hope you get it figured out. Things like this are generally simple to rectify, but maddening as hell to determine.

Good luck
Terry

Try swapping the new LEDs with the old LEDs on the other side, and try switching relays for one side to the other to eliminate the possibility of a bad LED or a bad relay.
If that doesn't ID the problem, drink heavily.
G/L.

I agree with the LED being the issue. It just doesn't sound right...... And the drinking idea is not all that bad. Just stay out of the cars.

Hopefully it isn't a jacked-up turn signal lever switch, broken detent or something. Maybe blow some compressed air into the steering column behind the stalk to see if there's something lodged in there?

Let us know when you solve the problem-- I'm really curious now.

It was me, I sold that when I got the '02 RL. I just got bored with it and got a lot of my money back.

As for the RL, I figured it out. Bad relay. My foglights wouldn't work either, so I replaced that and I'm back to normal.

Sidenote: 1st gen RL is a BITCH to take apart.. I could have done the exact same work on my '97 TL in a third of the time. What a pain in the ass..
