HondaCare or Aftermarket

I just bought a Honda Pilot as a second car, I posted this questions on a Pilot website but there isn't much activity over there and I need to decide fast.

It is a 2007 Pilot EXL NAVI 46k mi

CustomEdge/Warrantech - 5yr / 120k mi
Honda Care - 3.5yr remaining / 120k mi

I took the CustomEdge but I have another day to go back and switch it. Both have 0 deductible and are bumper to bumper. What should I do? Better warranty, or longer term?

It is certified so I already have 12k/1yr bumper to bumper, and 3.5yr 100k powertrain from Honda.

Thanks

We bought the aftermarket warranty because it was less expensive and you can take the car anywhere. However, now that I have an issue (blown speaker) I realized that I must take it to the dealer I bought the warranty from or pay $100 deductible. I live closer to a different dealer, but I'd rather drive an extra 50 miles and save the $100.

Read the fine print.

EDiT: Additionally, if the warranty company (CustomEdge) goes out of business, the dealer is not required to perform any work. The dealer is only a sales agent for the extended warranty company, not a service provider.

Personally? Neither. It's a (certified) Honda.

What are prices for each?

HondaCare, not a single doubt. I have seen WAY too many of the third-party warranty companies go belly up. In addition, they don't make money by paying claims ... just the opposite. One last point, they have no skin in the game - Honda DOES care if you are happy, from top to bottom.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I already knew the answer was honda care. I just don't like that is only 3.5yrs and costs the same as the longer one. I'll call them in the morning.

A side note: I miss this website. My infiniti has been perfect for 30k now but I miss having an Acura...

After over 12hrs not one single reply to this question on the pilot forum...

No better automotive forum than AZ IMHO. I'm glad I haven't been kicked off. Yet.

I would not get any. It's a Honda, it'll last long enough without much problem.

Acurazine is the best automotive forum I belong to. I believe it's the best for two reasons. The first being it is for all acura models while a lot of other sites are model specific. Secondly the people are on here were smart enough to buy and acura in the first place.

I emailed the finance manager and said I want to cancel the warranty altogether. I would like a hondacare because I like the peice of mind but not for the $1895 they are charging. I've never paid more than $1300 for honda/acuracare.

Thanks for all the replies.

I made the mistake of buying an 3rd party extended warranty through the dealership. You really have to do your homework on this and I wish I did more. The 3rd party company had MANY documented complaints of not honoring claims for one reason or another. I ended up canceling it (with a pro-rated refund, slight loss).

Story/rant aside, I wouldn't buy either of them, since its a CPO. You'll have enough time to gauge whether it'll be a money pit or not.

Also, the price of the factory warranty is definitely negotiable. I've read the mark up on it is ridiculous. Some people negotiate to less than half that.

Tis true.

But your post may be too late.

$1895? I think that would be enough to cover most issues (if any) the OP might encounter

My thoughts exactly (with most extended warranties too). Its a Honda. If something needs to be fixed, the most it'll usually be is <$300, if that. I've had a couple of minor repairs (usual stuff like sensors) needed on my TL and none were more than that. The beauty of Japanese cars.

That's about how much mine was. I think I justified it since it was my first experience owning a German car. Life regrets, guess you live and learn to not make the same mistake twice.
