Help me decide please!

So its came down to selling the CL. I don't even know how I let myself get talked into this but my wife wants me to get rid of it. I've posted in cartalk asking what you guys thought about the Scion tc and got good responses. Now the other car in the price range and performance I had in mind was the VW 1.8 GTI or VR6. Do we have any VW gurus in here? I wanna know about the possibilities of modding this car. What can I do to give this car more pep w/o breaking the bank? Here are specs from VW site. Thanks-john

Engine GTI 1.8T
4 cylinder, in-line, turbo-charged
Bore 3.19 in
Stroke 3.40 in
Displacement 108.6 in³
Compression Ratio 9.5 : 1
HP (SAE) @ rpm 180 @ 5,500 (132 kW @ 5,500) )
torque, lbs - ft @ rpm 173 @ 1,950-5,000 (235 Nm @ 1,950-5,000)

VS.

GTI 2.8L VR6
6-cylinder, 15 o V, gasoline
3.19 in
3.56 in
170.3 in³
10.5 : 1
200 @ 6,200 (147 kW @ 6,200)
195 @ 3,200 (265 Nm @ 3,200)

I'm a VW guru...

The possiblities of modding the turbo are endless, they are capable of handling 400+hp on stock internals. The cheapest mod is a chip. Next you can do is DP, exhaust, suspension. The mods are endless for this car.

The VR6 is the prime of the VW line of cars (except the new 3.2 VR6 24V). Though mods are available they are not cheap (Vortech SC is about 4K). The VR6 is a rock solid, bulletproof engine that will last for years and years. Most VR6'rs do 268 cams, exhaust (biggest difference), suspension, and CAI.

hahaha..hey nite, I found some old thread where you were sayin not to go into vwvortex.com cuz you said the info wasn't good anymore and you've been there since they only had 15 members! Good stuff tho what you were saying about the R32. Shit I didn't even know about that model till I came across that thread. The R32 is nice as hell!!! I want one now but price is too much for me. In your opinion...which one would better suit me? the 1.8 or VR6? I want something that'll perform but not get too deep in my pocket. I plan on doing the mods all at once. How much and what will the chip for the 1.8T yield as far as hp/tq? If you have a lot to commnet, please feel free to PM also. Thanks a bunch! -john

Yea, vwvortex sucks now, it's a whole bunch of wiseasses who don't care about the "car" anymore as the old VW'ers did. I've been a member for like 5+ years when their board vbb code sucked really bad.

If you want power and mods: 1.8T all the way. It's light (compared to the VR6), fast, and so easily modeable (sp?).

If you have the cash the R32 is also nice, but mods for that car is rediculously expensive because manufacturers are charging prime $ because of the low production numbers.

A chip (APR, Revo) will put the 1.8T at 210hp/240ft/lbs tq on pump gas alone. You can run a race program from the chip that can net and extra 10 each. CAI/Chip/DP/Exhaust will bring you to 240 with TONS of torque. A stage III turbo upgrade will bring you to 300. T3/T4 and a host of othe rball-bearing turbo upgrades will push the engine to the mid 300 range on stock internals.

There was a guy on the vortex forums that ran 425hp stock internals for over 70K miles other than more-than-regular maintenance schedules (due to obviously keeping everything running). The engines are definitely strong.

The best part about these engines is TORQUE, there is no need to downshift to pass, just step on the gas.

Also, an infamous 1.8T VW'r named Billy Turbo had his GTI running 12 seconds with easily obtainable upgrades, I've seen the videos, it's amazing! He still had the spare and baby seat I believe in the back.

Looks like I have found my next car. thanks for your input. Looks like I hve a new project to work on. I'll probably head down to the dealer this weekend to test drive. Hey, could you send me some links of where to purchase some aftermarket stuff (chip, intake, suspension). Or shall I visit vwvortex.com anyway just to see what everyone is about? I'm really excited bout geting a chip and upgrading the turbo. Woo hoo!!!

As for mods, here is my list
Suspension: KW stainless steel coilovers
Chip: APR
DP: 3" Custom
Exhaust: 3" Custom
Intake: There's a few to choose from, mine is homemade DIY style
Shifter: Dieselgeek, B&M, Audi TT
Brakes: Stoptech & Audi TT upgrade + stainless steel lines + DOT 5.1
Lighting: Euro E-Code + Smoked tails
and more...

Edit: VW Motorsports Dog-Bone Motor Mount will keep that power from causing wheel hop

Also, try www.autotech.com They're local, I've bought stuff from them many times. They offer a full LSD

already picked out the trim. Goin w/ Silver stone gray (unless the black looks better in person) w/ black cloth, 17" rims as my only option bring me to 20K. That's a cool link you sent, You're rite about the torque numbers, that is insane!

Alright, i'm goin to bed to dream about my turbo! hahaha! i'll let the other fellas chime in later today and see what they say. thanks for your help again.

These are awesome companies owned by really cool people I've met in person a few times, top-notch service and products.

I wanted a Jetta 1.8T (Wolfsburg edition) sooooo bad, but I ended up buying my CL instead. I kind of regret it now.

Good luck with your GTI!
