Help me AZine - Rear Caliper Piston Problem

So in preparation of taking my Mazdaspeed6 down the strip this Saturday I decided to install new rear brake pads. Passenger side went fine with zero issues, but when I got the drivers side and started turning the piston in (screw in type) I noticed it was taking a lot longer to turn in than the passenger side. It was turning just not recessing in at all. I tried backing it out a few turns to see if that would help loosen the threads up or something, but when I did that the entire piston popped all the way out and now it won't turn in at all, not even enough to get my old brake pads on. The old pads were only about 50% worn so it wasn't like the piston was already almost all the way out, so something is obviously wrong with it.

At this point I can either:
A. Get it flat bedded to the dealership and pay out of the arse...
B. Get a replacement caliper and put it on myself - which will have to wait until tomorrow and who knows if they're readily available or not or...
C. Try and have the broken one fixed.

Any suggestions? Anyone had this happen to them before on any of their cars? I had a seized piston once before on my old 240SX and they charged me an arm and leg to repair it. I feel so stuck without my car. This blows.

Just got a tip from one of my fellow Mazdaspeed guys saying to rent a disc brake caliper tool from Autozone. Hope that solves the problem.

make sure you take the cap off the master cylinder to alleviate any pressure in the lines, otherwise your working against yourself.

Thanks but yeah I always take the reservoir cap off and take off the e-brake, so that's not the problem. Like I said, the passenger's side went in fine, this one just decided to not play along.

I called my local AutoZone and they tent the tool for $60 and refunded when returned, so it's worth a shot since I'll get my money back anyway.

Fixed!!! I was able to put pressure on the end of the piston with my massive screwdriver while pivoting it through a hole at the top of the caliper while turning it with my pliers. After a few turns it started going back in. Whew!

I was going to suggest loosening the bleeder valve on the caliper also.

Sometimes the right tools make a huge difference.

Glad you were able to fix it. I had the same issue with it being stuck on my old 06 MZ3. The tool from autozone was a life saver.
