Help LIPPSTUH Buy a Bike

Hey guys, I'm thinking of purchasing a used bike. Probably will get flamed, but I want it as a daily driver . I'm attending college and I'd like to ride a bike to school/class instead of driving my CL.

Plus this will save gas =P. Nothing too fancy. Probably around $3000 to spend on a used one.

Also any idea how much insurance would be? I'm 19 . Don't worry I buy my own toys

i got a 82 yamaha XJ550 for like $900 as my first bike, shit ran great, 45+mpg. very smooth riding, easy to learn on. i put 5000miles on it in the summer i rode it. i took the bike everywhere.

being 20, i paid like $300 insurance on it. old bike's are cheap to insure. and u don't need much coverage for a bike like that either.

getting a bike to save money on gas is retarded unless you sell your primary vehicle all together. getting it for fun on the otherhand is great! i just put a deposit down on a ducati monster 696 in white. im done with my CL.

First off... if you're buying a bike to save money on gas, you're not looking long term. If you drop $3k on a bike you could just put that towards 600-700+ gallons of gas (depending how much it costs in your area). In other words, you'll need to keep the bike for quite a while just to break even.

If you still want a bike and it's your first bike, you should sign up for the local MSF class. Not only to you get a waiver so you don't have to take the DMV Riding Test, but you get valuable bike time to learn and/or brush up on the basics. That class in my area (Charlotte, NC) was $169.

Then you should look into a used Ninja 250 to start off on. You can get a good to mint condition '05 or newer bike for about $2200-$2700 depending on exact condition and mileage. Best part is that you can keep it for a year and sell it for only a little bit less then you paid since they hold their value very well.

FYR, my '05 250 gets between 68 and 72 mpg and I'm paying $120/year on insurance. The bike is my only transportation aside from my business vehicle.

Oh, and cltypeSLOW... I was at the Ducati dealer on Independence two weekends ago. I'm torn between a Monster 696 or an the 848. I'm going to test ride them in the spring and make a decision. I just want some more seat time on my 250 before I upgrade. Let me know how you like the 696...

My Dad is a Ducati nut. He has an '03 ST4s. He's been lusting over the 1098/848, sat on one for a few minutes and that killed his dreamed. "Just too uncomfortable".

If you're looking for a more kick ass bike to replace the 250 as a DD, the Monster will probably fit your needs better. You may also want to look at the Triumph Speed Triple or Street Triple.

Now if you're looking for a weekend or track day bike, it's 848 hands down.

i'm 26, clean record, trying to insure a 94 CBR 600 (with the insurance companies knowing i'll have the MSF class completed and a motorcycle license) and am getting quotes around $1100 a year

THat was with progressive and my car insurance provider mercury. Both with zero comprehensive and minimum liability!!!!

try markel, google markel motorcycle. my father pays 300 a year for two bikes.

for me however it's alot more, but CL power i would call them and get a quote, they specialize in bike insurance.

Thanks for the info. Odds are the bikes will never see the track. It will just be for fun and for a commute here and there. Right now I'm in my business vehicle 99% of the time, so the bike is just for fun.

Good to know that he thought it was uncomfortable. The 1098 didn't feel to bad to me, much more comfortable then say an R1 or ZX-10. The 848 was sold out though... to no chance to sit on it that visit.

I saw the Triumph's also and sat on them, but felt much more comfortable on the Ducati. When the time comes next spring I'll likely take them all out before I make a decision. I was dealing with the president of the dealership and told me when I was ready to just bring my stuff and I could take any bike out... so I'll just take him up on that offer...
