Is this a good bike deal???

A friend of a friend is selling his bike and I'm wondering if its a good deal. Here are the details:

1999 Yamaha R6
$4,000 or Best Offer I am offered $3800 with helmet
1999 Yamaha R6 Blue and White Championship color scheme
Low Miles!!! Only 8,000
Bike is in good condition with a CLEAN TITLE
Comes with full Micron Exhaust
Flush Mount Signals front and back
Eurotail with LED brake lights with integrated signals.
R1 Rear Tire Hugger
Polished Aluminum bar ends
This bike needs nothing.
Always kept in a heated garage
The bike is very well maintained

What do I have to check when purchasing a used bike? It is a friend of a friend but I don't know the guy at all, so I'm still afraid that I may get ripped off

Have you ridden before?

The R6 is no joke for a 600...it's pushing 120hp

3800 with the helmet sounds great.

You're not a bike expert so I would suggest taking it to a bike shop and pay the money to check it out if you are serious.

Oh, and as mentioned above. The R6 or any 600 sportbike for that matter is not to be taken lightly. Don't let the 600cc fool you. They are all quick and fast.

i wouldnt off more than 3k for a 98.. check tire wear.. how many times the oil has been changed.. the chain(see if its rusty.. if sop prob been sitting outside in the rain alot) even the new 06 r6 doesnt put down 120... luck if it get 106 to the wheel... and u cant go by mag dynos becuase the hand pick all of the parts for test bikes. so in no way will your bike be like the ones they dyno in the mags.. plus the new r6 i think comes with the slipper clutch (very nice anround 1200 for it aftermarket).. i would shop around in your case

That's what I'm thinking but the other guy says that he wouldn't pay more than $3000??? So am I just way off with my pricing? Should I ask for close to $3000??? I've been browsing around Craigslist and I don't see any late 90s/early 00s that are close to under $4000 without it being like 10,000+ miles.

Hmm....maybe I will take it to a shop. I'm assuming they would do a full inspection? I know that some 99-02 R6s have an issue with the 2nd gear slipping or something like that. I think its an issue at like 20K miles or maybe I'm wrong.

Already did. He will probably come with me on Sunday if I do go check out the bike.

ok, so you're saying that you wouldn't pay more than $3000 for this bike right? And I did read up on this slipper clutch thing, but I don't know too much about it. I'm not going to purchase a new ride because its just out of my price range. I'm looking only used if anything.

wooohooo Wil is going to be a yammie head LOL The R6 is no joke but as long as you dont over do it, and respect the power it has, its a bike that you will enjoy. Funny enough it was the guy's first bike, who bought my R6 a couple months ago.

for something that old, i'd offer 3800. and you have to check second gear. yamaha's are known to have the worst trannies on bikes, but it does have low miles.

Wait, so you know this guy Thierry?

And to all who have asked, yes this would be my first bike.

And what's all this stuff about Yamaha having bad trannies??? I don't want any major issues since I'm a new rider. This could be a good deal, but I want my first bike to be as less mechanical issues as possible and only human errors on my part.

Sorry...what I meant was that I know another guy who's first bike was a R6 and he was the guy that bought my bike. Oh and about the 2nd gear issue...the bike you are getting doesnt have that much milage so I wouldnt worry about that too much. I sold my bike with 9k and its transmission was as strong as it was when I bought it with 5k.

If the bike has been well taken care of don't humor your friend with a 3K offer. If it has been layed down or has any damage or needs any maintenence (tires, brakes, intervaled service...) then 3K would be a round-a-bout number. If he sold it to a bike shop they would probably just give him 3K or less for it and sell it to you for 5K. Privite deals are always better for the seller/buyer as long as the buyer is not trying to get over on price.

Just do your homework. If it doesn't work out then, trust me, there are 1000 other bikes out there.

I am going to do some research and think about it. I don't mind paying $3800 if the bike is in good condition and well maintained (which it supposedly was).

Thierry, I'm going to PM you about maybe checking out the bike.

I would do a check on www.cycletrader.com and see what the going market is for similar bikes. Also (but I may be mistaken) I think that KBB will gives motorcycle prices too.

NADA is much more accurate in terms of fair market value than KBB.

NADA has it quoted at $3100 for low retail and $4100 for high retail. Supposedly this car is in pristine condition so I guess $3800 + a free helmet is a pretty good price. I'll see tomorrow when my friend and I go check it out.

Oh, like I said, I have a connection to this guy so he says that he'll let me have it for $3800 + a free helmet if I want it. So if all goes well tomorrow, it could be a done deal. Still would need to get my permit and stuff though.

As a note, hubby sold his '96 Yamaha YZF 600rr for $3200. I'd say $3800 is a good deal...

(P.S. He started out on a 600..took it easy, but no major probs getting used to the power...)

It looks like I won't be getting this bike, thanks Thierry for checking it out for me!

Now, I'm looking at a 2002 Honda CBR F4i w/ 5200 miles for $4700. Pretty good deal right? Supposedly the guy is a wholesaler that sells to dealerships, but since the season is over dealerships aren't buying so he sells them straight to the consumer.

I'm thinking this is a good deal, so what do you guys think? He also has 3 available so I'm trying to convince my friend to get one so that we can maybe lower the cost by another $200.

AWESOME BIKE! I have an '01 Yellow and Black F4i. Hope it turns out to be a good deal. If this guy is a wholesaler then he should be able to sell it to you for 4K or less (but he won't) He only paid about 2K or more for that bike (from an auction).

As always, check it out first. Don't take anyones word for it, I don't care how cool they are.

I'm definitely going to check it out probably this weekend. It just sucks that I don't know how to ride yet and I can't test it out on my own...

So does the F4i have any known issues with them? I just started browsing a CBR forum so I'm not sure what's out there though. All I know about these bikes is that they're supposedly the most comfortable and pretty reliable...its fockin' Honda what do you expect

No issues that I have heard of. Everywhere I go they tell me that it is a pretty reliable bike. I hadn't had any issues with mine.

Don't worry, even if you knew how to ride they wouldn't let you take it for a spin anyways. On that note, be careful, get a helmet and at least a jacket for your protection and your first purchase for your bike should be a set of frame slider. They can be had for $40 or less and when you drop your bike it'll save you hundreds of dollars in repairs.

I've been hearing all about these frame sliders...but have no clue what they look like. Does it cover the side of your bike or something? Pics would help...maybe I'll google it.

So you don't think he'll let me or someone else test ride it? I'll have to ask, but that would suck since it is a used bike and not test riding it seems kinda dumb to me. You gotta ride it to make sure its not messed up right???

Well, here's a list of bikes he's offering...

01 cbr600 - red, couple scrapes with 16K - $4200
01 cbr600 - red, very, very clean with 19k - $4300
02 cbr600 - red, mint!!!!! with 5500 miles - $4700
05 cbr600rr - black, couple scrapes with 3500 miles - $6200 - (worth $7875)
04 cbr1000rr - silver with 3500 miles - $7600 very HOT bike!!!!

Naw, they won't let you ride it. If you lay it down you've just cost them hundreds of dollars in fairing damage, not to mention anything else that may be damaged.

Frame Sliders are tubular plastic fittings that bolt to the frame of your bike to protect it in the event of a fall or drop. Check ebay motors and keyword "frame sliders.

If I were you I would go for the F4i, not the rr. The rr is the better bike but you aren't even ready for the F4i, but I know how you feel. Out of the three, pick the one you can afford. If you can swing 4700 then get the best one, if not...

BTW, bikes are an expensive hobby. Just want to be the first to tell you.

Well, I definitely would be looking at the 2002 f4i for $4700 just because it has only 5500 miles while the other ones have 15K+ and only a few hundred less. I wasn't going to finance if I was going to pick up the R6 for $3800, but $4700 is a little too much for me to throw down right now. I'm thinking I'll throw down $2000 and then finance $2700. That shouldn't be too bad.

I definitely wouldn't get the RR. I heard the comfort level on those are horrible and since I want a bike for reliability, looks and comfortability, the CBR seems to be the one for me. Hopefully it won't get sold before the weekend. I think I'm going to drive up to check it out.

Cool, oh, streetbikes aren't "comfortable" per se. They are "managably comfortable". They are made for speed/handling first, rider comfort second, like any other performance machine. Not to worry though, you'll get use to it. I've heard that the F4i is one of the better streetbikes so far as ride position goes. I don't mind it at all. At first I could'nt stay on it very long without wanting to get off. Now I can go hours before a brief break. Good luck on that bike

That's another reason why I'll only put down $2000 and finance the rest. I need the money to get my gear. I'm hoping its not over a grand.

Quick Reply: Is this a good bike deal???
