blue scotch tape
in OP's defense... most places that sell painter's tape, carry scotch brand. and/or 3m.
i say if you dont tape your shit up to drive to work or the store.. why tape it on a long trip?
whatever amount of miles you're traveling on the trip will happen sooner or later around town... whats the difference?

I think hes ok with rock chips if it happens over many years. But if he can prevent it front happening on one long road trip then why not.
Love cars. I guess I just enjoy using them for their intended purpose too -- to drive them and enjoy them even while taking care of them too. People pay a lot to drive a car but at the end of ownership, do people really get as much satisfaction when they're worrying about the car all the time or would it be a much more fun experience driving with and loving every minute?
He'll get rock chips regardless - whether it's a 10 minute drive or a 1 hour drive. They're everywhere and nowhere...it's just luck of the draw. I can drive for months and not have anything on the road jump up and I can also have stuff bounce of the car and it's fine. People take the fun out of driving and getting around. He should tape the front of the car permanently if he really wants to be careful.

Im sure he would enjoy it a lot more knowing his front end isnt getting pitted during his trip. Cheap insurance in a way or better yet a peace of mind. Doesnt hurt anyone to do it so why not.
Also long distance driving i tend to get more rock chips than daily highway trips. Locally our highways are so congested that im rarely going over 65mph. Unlike the interstate in the middle of nowhere you can do 80+ for hours while semi trucks are kicking up fun rocks.
Not a serious matter either way though. I just think people can have fun with their cars while being OCD with it.

I tape up my car for long road trips
It looks goofy only for a few hours, but that's 1000 miles of rock chips that aren't on your car.
IMO it's much different than taping up your car for daily driving, which means that leaving it on for 1000 miles means over a month.

OP - use blue painters tape. It will do the trick. And I think it's a good idea.
To all the jackass naysayers - maybe the OP doesn't drive a lot of highway miles, or drive that much in general. A 1000 mile road trip may be more than he drives in 6 months and maybe he wants to keep his car looking as best as he can until he gets to his destination. Geezus... are there better options? Sure. A clear bra would look better, but it would be expensive. Is it a little excessive? Maybe. But this is a car enthusiast website and you'd think some people would understand.
Sorry for the rant but I feel like every day more and more people on this site want to just bitch and moan about EVERYTHING rather than just offer up a little helpful advice. Instead of telling the OP to relax and drive his car, why don't YOU relax and offer some advice or take a trip to shutty town (blue painters tape optional).
/rant
Also for the record - I drive 1000 in two weeks, so I don't put painters tape on my car. But if I didn't drive so much and I was taking a significant road trip where my car would be 5x as susceptible to rock chips as it normally would - you better believe I would use painters tape in a heart beat.

if your bumper is in GREAT SHAPE, do blue tape....I've done 10+ 2,000 mile road trips....only taped up once and that was right after the front bumper had been painted.
mid-night blue somthing like that you can notice the rock chips it has bcuz it's a dark color..And NO I'm not following a gravel truck all the way "FYI" I tend to stay back from any semi truck..

Guarantee ---- no damage!
