Girlfriend Ripped Off?
Hello:
My girlfriend has a 2006 Honda Civic EX Sedan and recently took it into Hoehn Honda in Carlsbad, CA for a "B Service." I looked at her invoice and it looks like they just changed her oil, air filter, and pollen filter. They charged her $258. Is that right? Doesn't sound right to me. Any input will help. Thanks!

Well, that's what she ordered and that's what she got. Yes, she got ripped off. All the other charges were for checks and inspections.
You should always have the dealer itemize the services to throw out the bogus ones.

Your girl really got ripped off... I would ask the service manager for a print out receipt specifically stating what was done to the car that would cost $258.

Dealership service pricing is outragous, what really pisses me off is your not getting good work performed most times. The oil change tech's are the new guys 95% of the time, they have no business working on a new cars, in particular when a premium is being charged for basic services... I will never figure out why people just assume a dealership's service department is best, the shadies repairs I have seen have all come from dealerships.

actually, I just had my 30k done on my Camry. The price of the 30k service, less oil change (I have lifetime synthetic oil change I purchased for $500) and a mini detail (regular wash plus vacuum and clean inside of windows/dash) was $187.
I remember always being raped at the Acura dealer for service. It was never under $300.

I just had a co-worker take her E500 for it's 2nd service. It was basically a oil change and inspection and cost her $500

um....
Why not call the dealership and ask them how they justify the fees? If that's truly all they did, I think it'd be pretty easy to prove that they overcharged; ask them for a breakdown of the fees, call other dealerships and get their quotes. Politely ask for a refund and have them make it right.
If not, just let them know you'll be writing to the BBB. They won't like that too much.

most honda dealers charge like $120 to check ONE thing. its a fucking ripoff, i remember they had charged me over 260 to check out my check engine light AND tranny. i got my keys back and left right away before they could do anything. what a bogus charge, its called inspection fee or something.

Price sounds about right to me
Caveat emptor... buyer beware. If your gf isn't checking the prices beforehand, I can't feel much sympathy... The cornerstone of capitalism is getting people to pay more for shit then they really should. It's the american way.
When I first got my CL, I just brought it to the dealer for service. 7500 mile service was a tire rotation and oil change. $151 !! So, I called around and every Acura dealer within 50 miles of me wanted the some price... I could have driven the 2hours up to NH to get it done for $89 tho' :shakehead
I did the 30K service on my CL myself 'cause I got quotes of $500 for it, but I did it for about $100.

i have gone to the ACURA dealer once for recalls for the ignition switch and egr valve replacement only, everything else I do my self, other than alignments and getting new tires. better off spending some of that 258 on a helms manual for her car.

I'm only down to about 10-15 minutes for the pollen filters. I've only done 'em once, and those clips for the glove box give me a hard time for some reason.
It's amazing that the dealership gets $100 for a 10 minute job with part costs under $15.
Flounder has a great writeup for changing the pollon filters here:

The acura dealer hates me; I just go there for an oil change (with the competitions coupon which they honor).
I get a free car wash too, all for $20

those pollen filters cost about 20-30 bucks anywhere.
it is located behind the glovebox. its not that hard to get to, im pretty sure there's a DIY somewhere on acurazine. once dropping the glovebox, you pull out the old ones and pop in the new ones. theyre so easy to replace. ive done it every once a year and it took me no longer than 10 minutes. a lot easier to do than even an oil change!
