Getting cigarette stench out of fabric

Any suggestions?

I bought a used arm rest for my explorer on Egay. Seller didn't mention that it REEKS of cigarettes. I mean it REALLY smells. The seller offered to take it back, but I thought I'd try to clean it 1st.
It's just plain gray fabric.

Thanks

You could try Febreezing it to the bejeezus belt but I think that by the time you get it to just be annoying you'll wish you returned it.

It'll probably always smell like something ...

It doesn't come off. I'll try the baking soda when I get home. I have that.

Do you happen to have a carpet steamer? like a little spot cleaner such as the bissel green machine, or spotbot. These are great for this...
If you do, soak the armrest in a foaming auto carpet cleanser, I like the tuff stuff brand. Let it foam up and then soak in. Hit the armrest with the steamer and your done! Smell gone, steam kills all.

Baking soda and hang it outside for as long as possible. Fresh air works wonders on getting rid of smells.

Baking soda worked a little. I soaked it in a solution of it & then used my wet vac to suck the water out of it. Nasty brown mess it was. I should sent the water to those trust people for a quit smoking ad.
I'll try the Febreeze next.
It's really going to be a PITA to ship it back. I'm going to try this 1st.

Febreeze will just mask the smell with a new smell. The only way to really get it out is to clean the fabric like you are doing and pull the odours from it. Could you also send it to the dry cleaner? I'd keep doing what you're doing though before giving up.

Sooooo, you're saying don't try to use poop to cover up the smell because it's not strong enough?

Ozium is good but vodka will get the smell out.

U could also just smoke weed with it.

Rug Doctor got the smell of cheap beer fermented cooked in a 95 deg greenhouse (car) out. YMMV

It's overkill for just that, but if you plan to clean a whole house or something with it, that should work. After doing whatever you do, ideally let it sit outside in the sun for a day, should help a bit more
