general car question

ok, my dad's friend was talking about how he had to get a new engine for his (relatively new) F-250 truck b/c the oil just turned to sludge. ford wouldn't cover the warranty and the dealer couldn't help him out. so he had to buy another engine... but that's beside the point. he got the oil changed on time every time, at a quick lube type place. he didn't go to the dealer b/c apparently they buy their oil in bulk and he thinks it isn't as good (must be a canadian thing? b/c i've never heard this living in FL).

so i guess my question is, why would the oil keep turning to sludge??? there's gotta be a techincal answer for this.

Is the motor diesel? Could be that the wrong oil weight was used for the engine, and improper oil pressure. This is how sludge occurs http://www.stp.com/faq_oil.html#4 .

Like baka_t said - if it is a diesel, they are VERY pick about oil weight and time. You said he changed it on time - on time as the manual said or by the general norm? My buddy has a Dodge 2500, and he let the oil change go 500 miles over what it said (only 3000 miles I think). Oil was BLACK and thick when he changed it. Also, you can't run the engine like a madman then just shut it off. Oil is HOT HOT, and just like the link given above says - will add water to it. The sludge will form from the water and the shit part of the cooked oil (obviously it can't hold the particles if it's toast).

Nothing, 2 different types of fuel systems. You only have chokes on carbs.

Newer fuel injected cars are capable of controlling fuel delivery seperatly from air. The fuel system(injectors) will spray more fuel in richening the mixture.

There isnt an equivalent for a fuel injected engine. The whole point of a choke is to cause a vacuum in a carburetor (in order for gas to get sucked it into the engine).

There may be a screw on the throttle body that controls idle speed. Depends on the vehicle.

IAC (Idle air control valve)
TPS (throttle position sensor)
MAP(Manifold absolute pressure)
MAS(Mass Air sensor)

Those are all involved on a new car.
