Garage Painting

I always see these people that say they painted their cars themselves, but what would I need/ how much would it cost to get the supplies and utilities to paint stuff in my garage?

I wouldn't attempt it...need to be pretty skilled in painting like that. If you want a good job you need a ventilated spray booth that is dust-free.

You seem really ambitious (sp?). A drag strip, carputer, and new paintjob? All at 17?

Just wondering the story.

I've seen some decent DIY paintjobs, but it's usually from people who have painted a couple of cars before.

Paint ain't cheap either... It's not uncommon to spend $1000 or more on paint alone. Then there is the supplies (like sandpaper, buy it by the box), a compressor, spray gun, etc etc...

One of these days I want to "practice" on one of my lawn tractors... I've got a compressor, but I'll need a gun...

Agreed. Even if he got all the equipment and paint for free(couple grand easy) he still would not be able to paint if right in his garage. Cheaper to get it done.

You need a way to 'scrub' the air of dried paint spray...some type of filter to blow the air out of the garage.

You also need a means to 'bake' the paint onto the car so it hardens properly. If not, it'll take a week or so before the paint sets. There are chemical hardeners out there, but even experienced painters need to calculate how much for each batch depending on humidity, etc.

My pops painted on the side for years...there's plenty to it.

I'm 17, which means I've got alot of energy and ambition generally. Also my car is my love, and I'm just trying to think of everything possible to do with her. And along with all of that is "where is my money going to come from?", so I start thinking about future jobs, thats how the drag strip came up.

Frustration drives me pretty hard too, my dad won't let me touch the car until January when he takes it off lease for me, so I've got so much jumbling in my head that can't become reality for awhile..
