Gasoline has not gotten cheap.. neither the cost of EV, nor cost of living. Price of everything went up. So no change there.
Yes people are telecommuting way more since 2020… they might no longer need get out of the house on a routine. So they aren’t filling up as much…

 

Buying an EV may bring out class "warfare", for lack of a better word. Those that own a home or higher end apartment/condo can have one with charging capabilities. Plus the initial entry is expensive. And I think places like California are really going to feel this as they snap up these cars and strain the electrical grid. Give it a few years and we'll see.

 

The argument that EVs are expensive is null these days. The average new car price is $48k. There's many EV options below that, some nearly $20k below. And prices are even lower on the used market.

Charging at home is the most valid point though - high density housing doesn't offer many locations to charge, but the flipside is that many of the people in city centers rely on public transport, scooters/motorcycles and bicycles anyway. It's the suburban sprawl communities that need to address charging capabilities at home (specifically those 3-4 story, multi-building, apartment complexes). Aside from legislation (which landlords and property mgmt companies will surely lobby against), landlords aren't doing shit to help that.

As far as electrical grid strain - EVs aren't charging 24x7x365, even if they're plugged in. The majority of the electrical grid usage occurs during the day, and the main consumers are not households, it's businesses and factories. Most EVs are charged overnight, when those demands (and in many areas, rates) are massively lower.

An EV costs just as much as an equivalent normal gas car these days, sometimes cheaper with tax incentives in play.
