Fair Price for Labor?

I recently went to a new mechanic and am wondering if he gave me a good, fair or bad price for labor. I have an 03 CL and had my front calipers, front and rear rotors, brake pads, and brakelines installed. Also the system was bled/drained. He charged me $290 for labor and I brought in all the parts. He did this at home, not a shop. What do you guys think? High, low, fair?

Sounds about on par with other shops to me.

But in other places, you're not only paying for labour, you're paying for their entire business essentially. I'd rather have him do it at a shop unless he gave you a discounted rate.

A bit much for an "off the books" job. If there isn't any warranty for his work (in writing) I'd say you paid too much.

Maybe a touch on the high side, but if his work is good and professional, I wouldn't give it too much thought. Let's say he took about five hours at $50.00 for $250.00 and another $40.00 for miscellaneous. Again, not bad.

if he's a friend, a case of cold beer is good enough. but if he's just some guy who works from home to earn some additional cash, $290 is too much, as changing pads, rotors, and bleed the system is easy as heck. i can probably do the job in under an hour!

I used to use a guy who charged $30/hour. I thought that was fair. He was a technician at a dealership and had his own lift at home.

If he's doing it at home, too much. I would say $30 per hour.

he did it @ a shop I think it's to much

my mechanic would have charged like 250 for all that but he does it @ his shop and that would have included parts

hell, 300 dollars sounds good compared to taking it to a shop for 700-9.

Its too much for a qualifed mechanic and "off the book prices".
If he is qualifed then why do it off the book anyway ???
If you have trouble latter ...
you might have trouble getting an adjustment.
If its a real friend ... beer to $30/hr.

Those are the breaks (brakes) !!!

Sounds a little high but too late now. How long did it take him to complete the job?
