Extinct in the Wild
Extinct in the Wild
My friend and I got to talking about this on Monday and it's had me thinking on and off. What would you say are the cars that are so rare to see in the wild that they would be considered 'extinct'? These have to be cars made and sold in fairly decent numbers when new but ones that didn't last very long.
> Hyundai Excel - Haven't seen one in probably six or seven years and I can't figure out why...
> Ford Aspire
> GM 'Dustbuster' minivans (especially the Oldsmobile version)
> Mazda 929
> Any Chrysler minivan older than 1994
> Yugo (this is a serious 'duh' but I used to actually see one around here on a fairly regular basis. The last time I saw it was in '08 so I presume it has long since checked out)
> Audi 5000 (not the rebadged 100 but an actual, bona fide 5000)
> Pontiac 6000
Any others?

I see Dustbusters day in and day out still, even the Oldsmobile versions. I think the Buick and Saturn versions of the 2006+ GM minivans are even more rare. Plenty of them used as taxis here.
Pontiac 6000, I still see a few here and there.
I'd add the Mazda 323 to your list, as well as the late 80's early 90's Civic sedan. EF I think. Hardly see them around. Shame, I think they're beautiful.

Hyundai Excel - I see one every now and then, but I live near little Mexico
GM 'Dustbuster' minivans - see above
Mazda 929 - my mom used to have one; I'd say it's been two years since I've seen one.
Any Chrysler minivan older than 1994 - again, go back to #1.
Fiero - I still see one every once in a while. One of my college professors had one...she loved it.
Sky/Solstice - Seriously? I see these all the time.
Ford Escort - again, see #1.

well, if they're extinct...you wouldn't see any of them because they would have died off and couldn't reproduce. most likely, a flaming asteroid or some sort of sub freezing temperatures.
endangered species, maybe?

Exactly-- I don't see 1st or 2nd gen (square) Cavaliers much at all.Haven't seen one of those in months.
1st & 2nd gen Integras are pretty common here in SoCal, as are the contemporary Sentras, Camrys and Corollas, compared to the almost non-existent Corsica or Beretta.
Scorpio! Holy crap I forgot about that.
That was not a cheap car. Sold almost 21,000 of them in all too. I can't recall having seen one in a long, long time.
The original base price of the car was $23,390 (equal to approximately $47,849 today). Options included automatic transmission, power moonroof, and Touring Package. Most North American Scorpios were sold with automatic transmission (some estimate that as few as 60 came equipped with a T-9 5-speed manual transmission, similar to the one installed in the XR4Ti) and Touring Package which raised the sticker price to $26,405 (equal to approximately $54,017 today).

Those are everywhere.
