Effects on tranny; switiching gears with car in motion
Are there any effects on an automatic tranny if gears are switched while the car is in motion. for example, if you reverseing and while the car is still rolling in reverse you pop into drive?

The torque converter can absorb some, but obviously at a certain point you are going to fuck something up. I personally always come to a full and complete stop before changing gears.
It also really depends on the transmission. Someone was telling me they had a friend who's truck got stuck so he decided to put it into 4WD and rev the engine, than drop it into gear, blew the POS 4L60E. On the other hand a couple of idiots in 3G rev up their auto TLs and drop it into gear and all it does is spin the tires(until one day when they blow the trans).

I just heard that it's "harder" on the transmission if you do that, so I just go to a complete stop before shifting.
Oh mjb, spinning the tires on a Saturn TAAT increases your chances of having them infamous "rod" fly out of your case...

Headlight case holding moisture
Has anyone had a headlight assembly hold mositure? I have a 2003 TL type S. Seems like this is bad news and costly to fix. Could it be the seal that is shot or perhaps something more causing the issue?

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS come to a complete stop!
My mom blew through 2 transmissions on our old Jeep Grand Cherokee. She would back down my sloped driveway, hit the bottom, and throw it into gear. She learned her lesson the hard way.

As far as the tranny goes, yes it's bad to put it in D when you're still backing up. You really should come to a complete stop before switching gear like that.
Honda's seem to deal better with that than most trannys, due to the fact that they have no planets, but it's not a smart move. You could cause internal damage.

The tranny doctor has spoken.
I usually throw it into neutral while backing up, so when I do come to a stop, I don't have to wait for a full reverse to drive engagement.

I remember once I did that when I had my permit I was backing out of our driveway with my dads car and I I pulled out into the street still rolling I put it in D and hit the gas, and DAMN that car made a really bad sound. It also jumped up too. Lucky we sold it awhile ago and the tranny never failed so its the next owners problem (I doubt that one time though really did anything that bad.)

There was a time back in the early 90's when Honda had some real problems with just this item. It was even reported as such on MotorWeek. I would play it safe and wait till you've come to a complete stop before engaging a forward gear. Then wait until you feel the transmission take hold before you apply throttle.

I had to replace my gear selector switch (located on the tranny) last year prematurely because I'd switch to neutral at traffic lights. The Acura gear selector switch (as well as other mfg's) does not do well with such abuse. Leave it in D unless it's significant driving delay.

Anyway, you're probably heating up the tranny fluid a little bit, or so I've heard.
I hate people that do that in autos, and even in manuals to a certain extent.

I'd never coast in any kind of traffic in Neutral (actually driving, not coming to stop at a light). It's just not safe if you have to make a quick/emergency maneuver. Another option would be to just lower your gear. Anyway, unless you actually live in the mountains, how often and for how long do you actually ever coast down long hills that it would really make a difference? Plus, I just find it funny to even bother when driving Auto. Just me though.

Also sometimes I coast down my parking garage so I can let the engine warm up while I'm driving. Usually I can make it all the way down, but sometimes if someone cuts in front of me I'll have to slow down to much to keep going and I'll have to come to a complete stop and put it in D to get going again. It would be cool if I didn't have to fully stop... I know I'm retarded.
