This dude in his M5

So I'm driving onto the highway, and come up behind some mean traffic. While looking to merge, I notice an M5 a few cars back, just riding with traffic. With absolutely no intention to get his attention, I guess he saw me get on the highway accelerating a bit hard. I did so to get in front of what was gonna be a large rush of traffic as the highway narrows from 4 lanes to 2.
Having seen that, I'm guessing this dude thinks I am driving a Ferrari or some shit. You know, the new four door Ferraris! Anyways, he pulls up along side of me, catching up to me like a bat outta hell. He looks at me, nods his head and waits like half a second, and just hammers it.
HOLY SHIT BATMAN! He just looked like he had been shot out of a cannon.
My dumbass of course decides to drive a bit faster behind him figuring if he is going 100+MPH on this highway, if I'm doing 80 and can at least see him, he will get nabbed for the ticket first.
I guess he noticed I was going a bit faster than 60, so he kinda slows down in order to let me catch up. He gets behind slower traffic, and makes it a point by slowing down to like 55 in order for me to pass, since the speed limit is 60, I pass at about 65, now that he's slowed down, I am not gonna be the guinnea pig for a ticket by still doing 80.
As soon as I pass, he again comes up next to me and nods, waits and bones out.
Don't get me wrong, it looked really cool, this car, and it was super fast, but was this guy seriously thinking I could race his ass??????? I mean, even if he thought the car was a 6 cyl, there is no way in hell I could even put forth an effort to keep up.

Makes me wonder another thing. That is my first to see an M5 running on the highway, and never realized they could go that fast. What is the cost of those things, like 80K or so, no? Also, would a 911 GT take it? That's about my price range for next vehicle purchase in 2 yrs. Porsche was first on my list, but to get a family sedan at the same cost that hauls that much ass.........that's another story!

The M5 is a 400HP 4-door sedan. It's damn quick.

A 911 GT would probably come close to taking it, but would be MUCH more nimble in the corners...but it's flashy.

M5's are still very expensive at $45K for a 2000 model year.

If you put it, and a Mustang SVT Cobra (2003+ model year) side by side...the M5 would JUST edge it out....and it's HUGE.

No way...last gen M5 is probably one of the all-time best sport sedans available.

As for now...I think I'd prefer the Audi RS6. Much more subtle than either the M5 or E55, but also fast and has quattro for those T-storms

Last gen M5 is one of the greatest cars ever imo. One of my dream cars.

RS6 - better handling, not an Audi person
E55 - fastest, worst handling - hate mercedes
Last gen M5 - best combo of sport/luxury speed/handling and the only one that has an available manual.

The up and coming M5 with the 500hp V10 is technically going to be an AMAZING BEAST.
Sadly, the new 5 design makes the car a total butterface and the interior is TERRIBLE.

EDIT: damn i was hoping all this would be merged so I could have my rep points and avatar from the CL site, guess i'll have to wait :shit:

I hear the E class is one of the worst quality rating cars in the MB line up... lots o' problems from what's been reported.

Junkster, who would still like to drive a AMG E55

I'll never forget, I was in my GS 400 on the way to Tallahasse on I-10, a STRAIGHT flat stretch of Highway, 2 lanes. I see HIDs coming fast and I thought it was a 911.
Wrong, new M5.
It was a friend and I in my car and well, I had to try it. To see the difference between 300hp and 400hp and a second difference in 0-60.
I was behind him in the fast lane about 80mph. We were both behind an 18 wheeler in the fast lane waiting to go over. I put it in 3rd in e-shift and waited for my fate.

The 18 wheeler moved over and all I saw was the M5 hunch down from the rear AND WHAM!! I floored my car and put it back in drive as I just wanted to floor it.

And we both did, that dude left my ass in El Segundo. FLYING. I hit my rev limiter at about 152mph and he was still going. By this time I could not read his license plate!!!!

ALL PRAISES TO THE E39 M5!!!!!

The M5 is something to be feared, no matter what year model it was...

I remember at DU, there's this daycare center that I walked by to get back to the frat house... This one dude would always pick up his kids in his M5 sedan!!!

Junkster, who wonders if there ever was an M5 wagon

That's what I would want to pick up my kids in... with a retriever in the back.
Then, I would race some Camaro at the light as my little ones cheer me on and my dog would stare back at the trailing Camaro...

Haha...wouldn't that be a sight.

And I agree with you, the wagon would not sell well here. Personally, I like wagons.

I certainly hope so. I can't wait for a wagon from Acura. I really would like to have a wagon just for the convenience.

Apparently you could import them for about $15K over the cost of a new M5 but they shut that down in a hurry. There's probably less than ten in the US.

Mercedes blolws bmw out of the water. Especially the new designs are so nice on the eyes. Not like the new bmw's where you have to think if it's a pontiac or not.

Design is but little accessory for a 400hp performance car (sedan, what's more). If you have such a car that can't handle the power, then you are in trouble. And as for a 55 AMG series going on limp mode in such a manner that you can no longer drive past 30mph for no reason, I wouldn't exactly call this blowing an M5 out of the water.

Mercedes is not more reliable then Bimmer at this point. They have had a huge quality drop in the recent years. Its funny cause out here in la la land I see 40 million NEW cars a days with their temp tags and all. About 10 of them are new Mercs, these hollywood folk love their status symbols...And out of the 10 mercs about 7 of them already have at least one burnt out taillight, audi/vw too!

Sorry, if im paying that much money a for a new car I want an electrical system that is going to shit on little saftey issues like brake lights. And I dont know about you guys but if i see a brand spanking new car, specially one that costs that much, finding a burnt out like is gaudy and would make me feel like i just bought a POS of a car.

Now, bimmer can have their problems too, no mechanical product is perfect. But I see just a many new bimmers and not once I have a seen a burnt out tail lights.

The real problem with Merc, and all the other German brands as well, is that they have installed a ton of new electronic systems in their cars. The end result is that those systems become too complex and complexity breeds problems.

The upper income bracket folks around here have the RS6 Avant (Tourer) as the standard family vehicle. Quite common actually.
To further, I saw the new A6 on the road today - it took a couple of seconds to register what the hell it was. I still don't know what to think other than it's different.

Yea, I would like to see what the new grill looks like up close and personal. It just looks odd to me in pics, very un-audi in that it seems to clutter the lines of the car.

Junkster, who also wouldn't mind a E55 estate

When I first saw the A6 I thought the grill was scraping the ground it seemed so low. But it's just an illusion due to the layout. Once you get past the front it looks OK.

There is no "probably". It's not "one of" the best sport sedans. It's the greatest ever. Period. And that makes it worth every penny of it's price.
