Dubai abandoned luxury cars
http://directorblue.blogspot.com/200...xury-cars.html
Did a search and didn't see anything posted on this. Some of pics are pretty unreal (assuming they're real). My cousin has traveled to Saudi, UAE, and Kuwait and seen more than a few abandoned luxury cars.

I've always thought about this...what would happen if you just take one of these cars?? I'm sure the owner would care for a $250000 car if he's got $373736728282728 in his bank account!

Maybe they don't have 3 bajillion dollars in the bank?
Instead of selling them like sane people do, they're probably waiting for it to be stolen then collect insurance.

On a side note, Dubai is a really sandy place.

I believe the govt. becomes the property owner of it since 90% of the time, the owner has fled the country.

its not the whole middle east it is only in extreme parts of Saudia Arabia that they believe ur hands should be cut off for stealing and as far as being stoned to death goes that has happened in certain parts of the middle east so it shouldnt be implied that you get stoned to death for grand theft in Dubai which is where i was born and i know for a fact that you dont get your hand cut off but rather get sent to jail...........

And then you get to rot away in their prison system.:thumbsdow

That's not too bad. Why would you be concerned... are you planning to steal something in Dubai?
Dunno if its true or not but I heard that in Japan if you steal they chop off only a part of your pinky. It's a subtle reminder that will always be with you.... in your job interviews or when you meet someone, they'll see that you're a piece of shit thief.
I'd be more concerned with things like I can and can't get away with. What if I can't look at a woman too much, or if my woman can't show her face?

I live in the Greens here in Dubai, and see tons of cars covered in sand which are obviously abandoned. They put stickers on them giving 1 month to move the car before they tow it away now. It was really bad early this year. I used to see tons of cars lying around which were obviously abandoned - even an R8 once.
To prevent this, now companies have to notify the govt BEFORE laying off or firing people, so that the govt can make sure they can't leave the country without paying off their debt. The sad part is, after you get fired/laid off, you have one month to leave the country which means you have one month to sell your car / house / whatever in order to repay your debt before leaving. You used to be able to buy cars really cheap during the peak of the crisis. For example, I saw a 2009 GS430 OFFERED at USD 35k with only about 10k km on it early this year. That's damn cheap. I bet the guy didnt get more than 30k for it...
That being said, things seem to be stabilizing here. Traffic is getting worse which is a good sign for the emirate (i.e. more people moving here).

Thanks for the in-emirate perspective. I've always wanted to visit but know relatively little about the place. You have a month to pay off your debt in thus situation? Then you go to debtor's prison? What actually happens if you don't pay your debt?

Having said that though, if you work for an international company, they usually try to help you out as much as they can. I work for a British company and my boss who was just asked to resign about a month ago will remain an employee of the firm until next May because his kids just started school here. My company is pretty good when it comes to these things so he is one of the lucky few (given the situation).

Didn't mean to offend you man, but the punishment for many things is a bit extreme for many things even in Dubai. Here's an example, I'm gay and if I were to ever go there and the authorities found out I could serve up to 10 years in jail under their penal code just for being who I am. Also even having the smallest amount of pot can send you to jail for years. I'm pretty sure an American tourist had some shake or something caught in the sole of his shoe and got time over it. But it gets better even having a prescription medication in many instances equals jail time. Making out with your wife/girlfriend, ect in public view, jail time. It seems like even though the UAE is a little more liberal and slightly more pro-western it is still a backwards ass place. I would never want step foot in that country regardless of all the glamour it got, too many strict rules and denials of basic human freedoms. So yeah sorry for the comment as it was worded poorly, but at the same time you should try to see the American perspective on this place.

Must be some solution to the abandoned cars.
Laws in Dubai aren't backward. They just feel differently about things than we do here. If we don't learn and respect the rules of other countries we should stay home.

If you're gay, you get sent to prison. If you show affection to your wife, you get sent to prison. If you are rude to the police or piss them off, you can be arrested. They'll also throw you in jail if you make a rude gesture. I refuse to respect rules like that, therefore I'll never be visiting, I don't care how great it is.
I actually think it's quite funny to watch their bubble burst.
