Does the M3 Have Any real Comptetion?

I was wondering what you guys think is the best Competitor for the M3..i also heard the the M3 is unique in that BMW seems to have inaccurate specifications for it (they have it down as being faster than it really is)
I heard about the CLK 55 but that is 10 grand extra

The S4..But still..I know handling is there..but..its not quite up there yet..unless i dont know something that i should.

Just wondering what you guys think

A friend of mine in Florida just got a ZO6--says it is outstanding. He even likes the stability system--and that says something since he is a shifter cart guy who also has a Viper GTS. He got the yellow. I guess it is the 50th anniversary year. Think he paid like $54K for it. What does the M3 run?

for sport car only.... i say Z06 is better than the m3. BUt im a snob and i like the material they use in the interior of the m3 over the z06.

All depends on the person i guess. BUt i know if i wanted a all around sports car... then it would be a z06.

The Z06 is an AWESOME car...and I know it's a little faster than the M3 for the same price. But I tell you what. Nothing gets my pulse pounding like seeing a beautiful black M3 on the street. German engineering at it's finest.

Man... the last time I went to the track a gutted-out M3 with a few mods was running a 13.7-something. I hit a 13.9-something with a header. With a few more mods not totalling more than another $1k, I'll catch up. I paid $30K for my car, the M3 owner paid $53K for his car. I think the CL 6spd is a good competitor!!

Stock to Stock.... the M3 is a MUCH superior car, I have to admit it. The CL needs a tad more work on the suspension part to even get close to the handling capability of the M3

If I was being chased by maniacs and needed to escape, I'd be in the M3 up in the hills.

CLS -- nice and fun to drive at 98%.
M3 (and setup-Bimmer's) nice and fun to drive at 99.99%

And... the SMGII is nice for day-to-day driving with the cattle and also make for fun and control up in the twisties...

you don't happen to have this video clip? love to see it..
do you think a heavily modified cl could take on a m3 or 350z on a track, or does our fwd eliminate us from that.

If you're talking "road course", anything is possible (with enough effort and time) ... but ....

Kevin M, a member here who passed is road course car along, gave up on it. It had:

SSR 17x8 Competitions
Kumho R rubber
Coilovers (previously Konis + Comptechs)
Sways
Racing seat
Roll cage
Lightweight battery
Headers
CAI
The full 13" Brembo kits + brake ducts for forced air cooling

He couldn't get the car to "rotate"...

I think the 350Z, G35C, etc with their underbody treatment -> low drag and zero lift already allows for a nice start for a car that will handle well at 100+ MPH...

Both the M3 and 350Z/G35C are basically front mid-engines...

The CLS would be "hurting" in the braking/weight transfer department...

Ok, define "on the track". Cuz i know the 350Z is supposed to have some sort of sick skidpad rating, but otherwise the m3 will bend it over.

Ummm, is it me, or are we missing that a 350z is 14.0 14.1 car (lol, with the sun and moon in proper alignment) And the M3 is a 13.2-13.3 Car... I'd love to see the 350z take it...

LOL, someone said that they saw one run at the track at 13.9. You must be talking about a E36 M3...
E36 M3 (last generation)

E46 M3 Current generation.

Sorry but a true comparison would be a 2+2 vs. 2+2. Granted comparing $ vs. peformance is ok. His original question was "does the M3 have any real competition". Not does anyone make a faster car for same $.

So using a Corvette to me sounds rediculous.

Tons of misinformation in this thread.....First, the 350Z DIDNT beat the M3 around the roadcourse. They just tested all the cars in Japan and the Z was 4 out of 6 IIRC.

Second...E46 M3s DONT run 13.7s stock with a decent driver.....So how is a modded one with less weight doing so. Answer it was an E36 M3. My friend ran a 13.3 in his E46 M3 his first time ever at a drag strip.

And the M3 isnt really a good competitor to the Z06. The Z06 destroys the M3 in every performance catagory.

Some of you numbnuts are compaing 2 seaters with a M3 4-seater. The M3 OWNSZ it's own market on 4 seater RWD 333hp manual credentials. Though it costs to much to me.

What other 2 door RWD, 4 seat beast is there for 50k?None, get over it.

5 seat, and a 350Z won't keep up with an M3 on a roadcourse.

Man, you guys are fucking bunch of ricers. I bet you guys are all under 20 and never been to the track. I'm not talking about drag stips, I mean the real fucking track. M3 is for girls. How you fucking race w/ 3500lbs car? I tracked a E46 M3 and it handles like shit. Even WRX can spank its ass. Not to mention I toy around M3 w/my 996TT X50. LOL.

When you think this thread could only get smarter, you come along. You obviously have never been on a track. If WRXs are taking E46 M3s, its the driver. Do your research on road racing next time before you come over here calling people ricers.

LoL. You guys better have something to back up your bullshits. I tracked many cars at Buttonwillow, street of willow and Calispeedway. Also been to many autox. I've seen S2000, WRX and even a Turbo Miata kick E46 M3's ass up and down. Don't even bring up Z06, M3 is not even its level. Maybe M3 is fast in straight line, but it handles suck like cock whore. If you want a cheap and fast straight line car. Just get a CamaroSS or Mustang Cobra. They only cost half of a M3.

I still dont believe that you have ever drove around a track. If you did, you have no idea what the hell your talking about. Saying that the E46 M3 "handles like cock" is quite a dumb remark. The car is only as fast as the driver makes it. You would obviously realize this if you have been to a road course. The cars you named such as the S2k and WRX will get raped by an E46 M3 on a road course. Again, do your research on road racing before you try and convince people that you do it.

Take some of your day trading money and go back to school. Try taking some english courses. Mabye even proper speaking, or how about a course on "how to win an argument" without sounding like a schmuck!

Your rude, and immature. If you consider some of these replys to be from 20 years olds. That makes you sound about 16. Your not setting a very good example for a 30+ year old.

I'll agree the WRX does handle well. And yes they are *very* close depending on the track. I've seen them within 1 second of one another.

You can compare models and track times on the site below. However the M3 will shine on tracks where the WRX will fall behind. And vice versa. It's not a simple yes/no answer to who's faster. Depends on what track your talking about, and who's driving the car...

http://www.car-videos.com/performance/models.asp

And back to the original topic. If you find *anything* luxury in the WRX you just let me know. Now that we have that out in the air. Why don't we find a real car that competes with the M3.

M3 = Luxury Sports car

Let's see if we can get this thread back on track
