Exclamation Do we have any spying devices like OnStar on our cars too?

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/onstar4.htm
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/21/g...after-you-uns/

After reading this information, I'm shocked how an automaker tries to invade our privacy. I've been trying to find out if we have any similar devices on our cars too, but I can't find much on Google.

Any ideas?

I just spent some time working on the antenna and finally get it disconnected (lol). Now when I turn to XM radio, it says no signal.

Besides XM radio, are there any other big brother devices that I can disable?

Your car is NOT transmitting anything. It's all passive.

But I guess ESP is integrated into the ECU?

I'm worried if TL has any cellular modules like OnStar, which can send information to the manufacturer even if GPS service is turned off.

Actually a car equipped with Onstar does transmitt data back to GM when it is requested (GM sends a query to the vechicle aka data polling). It (the digital systems) use the cdma cellular network. the AMPS version of onstar no longer works as there are no towers (they were systematically shutdown in Feb 2008)...

Things that GM can do with Onstar

1. realtime GPS tracking (theft receovery)
2. Remote dianostics and reminders for things like service intervils
3. actively call your car but they cannot subvertly listen in as the hardware will flash a light, mute the radio and play a riniging tone. It is unknown if this can be changed via firmware.

The FBI wanted access to the system but were denied by the 9th circuit court of appeals as it would adversely affect the safety features of the system.

Acura used it for 1 year (2003)

As far as I know Acura, used onstar for the 2003 model year in some cars like the TL and CL. It was not carried forward for 2004 or newer cars. I am not aware of anything with similar functionality replacing it.

I was actually arrested and persecuted 3 years ago for talking the wrong thing on my phone. I got out of it, but I was just very lucky.

What's going to get your panties really in a bunch is the black box that records accident data......A dealer can plug in their scan tool & see what was logged.

OP,
Who cares if you are tracked. If your every movement in life was that important you wouldn't be writing it down on a forum site for everyone to see in perpetuity.

Unless you are burying bodies in the desert, NO ONE CARES.
