DateLine (NBC), Friday, 17 Sept.

Check into DateLine Friday, 17 Sept., on NBC at 8:00p Eastern. One segment is to be about cars and speeding; especially amongst young people.

People have been street racing and speeding for a LONG time. I have a friend whose grandfather just died at 98, he told me once about racing his Indian on gravel roads in the 1930s. The only reason the media has been focusing on it is because they know it gets ratings.

Anything for a story.

Racing has been going on for thousands of years. Ever heard of Marathon? The poor runner died after 20+ miles. Millions of people have raced horses over the years and hurt themselves, their noble steeds and others. Hell, even the Amish kids race their buggies to this day.

No disagreement that racing has been going on for a long time, but a runner isn't likely going to hurt a lot of people if he wipes out, and horse races and chariots and buggies used to be raced in controlled settings (not that this is always the case).

I do have a problem with street racing, which is different in that it is performed on public roads shared by others, the drivers are often young and inexperienced, and the consequences can be far more severe for both the drivers and innocent bystanders. That's why there are race tracks and laws against street racing.

2 fast 2 furious didn't really help street racing too good in my opinion.. it helped people notice definitely, but now it's felony to even watch the damn fools racing on boulevards.
