Have I lost my mind for even considering this?

I PM'ed Dan Martin about this awhile back and he said it was a bad idea and I agree. But the potentiall cost savings keep luring me back.

A 2003 CR-V EX with only 16,870km's for $9574.00. The catch, its a wreck. I contacted the seller and he claims it needs a front passenger suspension , fender and passenger front door. Tthe air bags went off as well and will have to be replaced. He gave me an estimate of $4000 to have it all repaired which I think is way too low. But even if it cost me 8K I can probly get the car for 8.5K + 8 = 16 to 16.5K total. Keep in ind that other used 03 EX's go for 24 to 26k.

Link to pics.

I think you may have lost your mind on this one. I wouldnt want the hassle of getting this fixed and if they dont do a good job, then what? Do you get some type of warranty with the vehicle? Do you know if the frame has been bent at all? Do you trust this place and their work? Can you get another estimate for repair costs? Just a few things to consider.

I 'd stay away. Even if the fixup is good, it's never going to be exactly right. It might look OK when it's done, but you could have persistent alighment problems or the door may never seal up just right or one of a dozen other things could go wrong. You're talking about a new vehicle to be used for transporting your young family around. Why take a risk?

I think I have lost it. I just finished showing this to a co-worker and he also mentioned the bent frame concerns which I havn't even thought of. Those repairs look like they'll cost 15K not 4.

And I'm the same person who fought with the insurance company to write off my 98 year and a half old GS-R after it was wrecked.

Problem is, I'm findimg it extremly difficult to find a CR-V for a good price. Most are 25K + Anything less has a ton of mileage.

Domn, have you considered the Impreza 2.5 wagon? The MSRP for a new one is only $22,900 or $24,100 with the Auto. Autotrader has a number of them in the GTA too.

If you are in no rush, then why push it now. Did you ever go look at that Hyundai that you were interested in? I still think if you are patient, then something will come along. 2002 was the year they changed the design of the CR-V (Gen II). Some of the Gen II will be coming off leases in a few more months. Why not wait a little longer?

Oh ya. We were quoted on the weekend. The 2.0L FWD version is 28K CAD, 27K with haggling on the road and the 2.7L FWD V6 is 30K on the road with haggling. We were looking for my dad as there's no way I'm spending more than 20K. He also thinks its too much.

Right now I'm leaning towards a Vibe or Matrix. If I can get one for 23 out the door I may jump even though its more than my 20K limit. If not its probly a used Vibe or Matrix for under 20K.

Yep the back seat is pretty small. It would be ok if there was a mini back there but I wouldn't put adults back there for long trips.

Still a pretty good value when you factor the AWD. It's only a $1000 more than a Civic Si.

I really don't have any experience with Hyundai cars but we have a few of their CNC lathes in our plant and they are excellent. Hardly an apples to apples comparison, but just thought I'd throw that tidbit out there.

BTW _ I was at Acura on the weekend getting an oil change/recall fix/Replacing headlight and they had a 03 CR-V LX in great shape with 22,000 kms listed at 25K. I was lead to beleive I could get it for 27 OTD. I went back at 25K OTD but I doubt they'll budge. I put an e-mail into my saleguy to see what can happen.

I hope you mean styling wise because they're the same damn car. I was at both a Toyota and Pontiac dealer recently back to back and they're identical on the inside. I personally prefer the styling on the Vibe.

This mornings Toronto Star had an ad. Cash Purchase price on a 05 Vibe - $20,998 + taxes, freight etc. Apparently they don't take anything else off that price since the finace price on that Vibe is 26K. So 20,998 + 1K freight = $25,297. 23K sounds more resonable.

They actually revised the styling for the 05 Vibe, alittle cleaner. The problem with the 05 Matrix, they added the Altezza clear riceroni tail lights

GAWD DAYAM!!! Did they both roll off the same assembly line??!!??

If you're going to get a Matrix, get a silver one...to hide away some of the rear ricyness...
I still like the overall shape of the Matrix over the Pontiac...plus better reliability...

domn, I think this one is going to come down to styling. Which one, Vibe or Matrix, do you and your wife like the best? Although, I am still hoping you will find a decently priced CR-V.
